Seven schools becomes ninety-eight

Seven private schools sit inside the city limits (see inside Irvine). Another 91 sit outside the line but within fifteen straight-line miles. These two pages are halves of one question: the in-city page explains why the local field is so small, and this one shows how far you have to widen the circle and what widening it costs. The 91 break into three bands: 12 schools within five miles, 39 between five and ten, and 40 between ten and fifteen.

These are straight-line miles

This needs stating plainly, because the number is easy to misread. Each figure measures the distance from the school to Irvine city center in a straight line, along no actual road. On the 5, the 55, the 405 and the 73 at 7:30 in the morning, real driving time commonly runs one and a half to two times the straight-line figure. A school listed at ten miles can be a thirty-five minute morning drive. A school at three miles, if the route crosses the wrong two intersections, may not be much faster. Use the mileage to draw a boundary and nothing else.

Drive the route before you commit

Once a school is on the shortlist, drive it on an ordinary weekday at the school’s actual arrival time, then drive the return trip at dismissal. Once is enough, but it has to be the real time of day; a weekend or midday run tells you nothing useful. Families regularly remove a school from consideration after that single drive, which is a great deal cheaper than discovering the problem in October. While you are there, watch the drop-off line itself, since a close school with a slow loop can cost another fifteen minutes.

Assume you are driving

Only 16 of the 116 schools in the database state that they run a bus, and those that do differ in routes, stops and cost. In other words, more than eight in ten schools expect families to handle transport. Before committing, map one full week on paper: two drop-offs, two pickups, after-school activities and both parents’ working hours. Whether the commute is sustainable becomes obvious immediately, and it is a question about your household rather than about the school.

Where the schools cluster

Across the full set, Anaheim has 13, Orange 11, Santa Ana 9, Huntington Beach 8, Costa Mesa 7 and Newport Beach 6, with Rancho Santa Margarita, Fullerton, Lake Forest and Garden Grove holding four each. Clustering does not make a city a better fit, but it does shape how you spend visit days: two or three schools in one city in an afternoon beats crossing the county twice. Tuition figures throughout are the current published year and are normally revised annually.
