Orange County private schools that issue I-20s for F-1 students

The I-20 is the gate, not the goal — what decides whether this works is the entry grade, the housing and guardianship plan, and a timeline several months longer than a local family's.

A good fit if

  • A student planning to enter grades 9-12 on an F-1 visa and finish high school in the US
  • A family relocating to Orange County who needs a school experienced with international students
  • An applicant abroad who needs a school-issued I-20 before booking a visa interview
  • Anyone narrowing a long shortlist down to schools that actually issue I-20s

Look elsewhere if

  • Families who need the school to solve housing; most schools here do not offer boarding
  • Enrolling a young child on an F-1 visa long-term at the elementary level, which is legally limited
  • Anyone whose real question is immigration status — that belongs with a licensed immigration attorney

How this list was built

Of the 116 private schools in our Orange County database, 43 state on their own pages that they issue the I-20 for F-1 students. Only schools that say so explicitly are included. A school that is silent on the question may still enroll international students — it is worth asking — but silence is not a yes, and a shortlist built on assumptions falls apart late, when there is no time left to rebuild it.

The I-20 is a gate, not a goal

It is easy to treat “issues I-20s” as the finish line. It is the entry requirement. The school decides on admission first, issues the I-20 at enrollment, and the family then pays the SEVIS fee and books the visa interview. The document guarantees neither admission nor a visa; it only opens the next steps.

Once a school clears that bar, compare what actually matters: academic load, class size, and whether support for international students is a real structure or a line of marketing. Asking whether there is a designated school official and who handles SEVIS records tells you more than any brochure paragraph.

Where students realistically enter

The grades 9-12 schools and the K-12 schools together — 21 of the 43 — are where international students normally enter. Grade 9 is the cleanest entry: the curriculum starts fresh, friendships form at the same time for everyone, and the four-year transcript that US universities read is complete. Entering after grade 11 compresses credit evaluation and college applications into the same months.

The 22 K-8 and elementary schools serve a different situation: a family relocating with a younger child, or a parent accompanying the child. They are not a route for sending a young child abroad alone.

The elementary limit

Public elementary school is not available on an F-1 visa, and private elementary enrollment on F-1 is capped at 12 months in practice. How that interacts with your family’s circumstances is a legal question, not a school-selection question. We do school selection, interview preparation, and application materials from Irvine; we are not immigration counsel. Verify your own situation with a licensed immigration attorney before signing an enrollment contract or paying a deposit.

Housing and guardianship come before the deposit

This is the step most often deferred and the one most likely to break. Most schools on this list do not provide housing; Fairmont Preparatory Academy is the notable exception in the county, with a boarding and homestay arrangement. Everywhere else, housing means an accompanying parent, relatives, or a homestay you arrange yourself. Many schools also require a local legal guardian and an emergency contact on file. Start after the acceptance letter arrives and the calendar will be against you.

English evidence and timeline

Expect to document English proficiency, though the form varies: school transcripts, a language test score, a live interview, sometimes a writing sample. Rather than guessing, ask in your first email which the school accepts.

Then build the calendar backward from the first day of school, with the visa interview — not the application deadline — as the fixed point. See planning a private school application for how the rest of the sequence fits together.

Frequently Asked Questions

If a school is not on this list, does it refuse international students?

Not necessarily. We only include schools that positively state they issue I-20s. A school that says nothing may still be worth asking, but do not assume it can — confirm with the admissions office before you build a plan around it.

Does an I-20 mean the student is admitted?

No. The school issues the I-20 after admission and enrollment are settled; it is what allows you to pay the SEVIS fee and book a visa interview. Admission comes first, and the visa decision is a separate matter entirely.

Can a younger child attend elementary school on an F-1 visa?

Public elementary school is not an option, and private elementary enrollment on F-1 is capped at 12 months in practice. How that applies to your family depends on your circumstances — we are not immigration counsel, so confirm with a licensed immigration attorney before committing.

Do any of these schools provide housing?

Most do not. Fairmont Preparatory Academy is the notable school in the county with a boarding and homestay arrangement. Elsewhere, housing usually means an accompanying parent or relatives, and it needs to be settled before the deposit.

How far ahead should we start?

Further ahead than a local family. On top of applications and assessments, you need the school to issue the I-20, the SEVIS fee paid, and a visa interview booked and completed. Interview wait times vary widely by post, so roughly a year of lead time is realistic.
