EDUBUS Admissions · US Graduate School Applications
Most EDUBUS graduate school clients come from universities in mainland China; others studied in the US or in the UK, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, or Canada. Each starting point meets different hurdles on the way to the same US master's or PhD program: whether the degree length is accepted, how grades are read, whether an English test is required, and how credentials are verified. EDUBUS counselors are based in Irvine, with a China office in Guangzhou, and build each plan around the student's starting point.

This table answers one question: where do application materials differ depending on the undergraduate system? Confirm each program's rules for the current cycle.
| Mainland China | United States | Overseas | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree length | Four-year bachelor's, which meets US graduate degree requirements | Same system as US graduate schools | Three-year degrees are common in the UK and Australia, and some US programs do not accept three-year ordinary degrees; Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada outside Quebec are mostly four years |
| Grades | 100-point scale; UCLA requires an overall average of at least 80 | 4.0 GPA, the scale admissions committees know best | UK degrees are read by class, and UCLA and UC Irvine require a First or 2:1; elsewhere, each university's own GPA scale |
| English | TOEFL or IELTS required | Waived for a bachelor's from an accredited US university | Depends on whether WHED lists English as the university's sole language of instruction |
| Credentials | Official transcripts, graduation certificate, and Ministry of Education degree certificate; some schools require CHSI verification | Official transcripts | Transcripts and degree evidence; the final degree class is set only at graduation |
| Immigration status | F-1 student visa with the I-20 issued after admission | Current F-1 students change education level at the same school or transfer their SEVIS record | F-1 student visa with the I-20 issued after admission |
1Starting point 1
A four-year bachelor's degree from mainland China meets US graduate school degree requirements, and this is the largest group EDUBUS serves. The work lies in turning grades, certificates, experience, and recommendations from the Chinese system into materials a US admissions committee can read and verify, while fitting applications around postgraduate recommendation, the national graduate exam, and the senior thesis in the fall of senior year.

What to prepare
Five common challenges for applicants from mainland China
Postgraduate recommendation, the national graduate exam, the senior thesis, internships, and applications all land in the same semester, so tests and materials need to be sequenced from junior year.
The 100-point scale, class rank, and the university's grading standard need clear explanation so the committee does not misread them.
Projects and internships by mainland China applicants are often written as task lists; US committees look for the research question, method, and result.
Recommenders are busy and write differently, so agree on timing early and give them factual notes on courses and projects.
When a program has prerequisites, show readiness through electives, research, or additional coursework.
After admission: from the I-20 to the student visa
After admission, the school's designated school official (DSO) creates a SEVIS record and issues the I-20.
Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee using information on the I-20; it must be paid before the visa is issued.
On the US embassy or consulate website, pay the visa fee, complete the DS-160 online, and schedule the interview.
Bring the original I-20 and the documents the embassy or consulate requires.

2Starting point 2
Students at US colleges know American classrooms, their recommenders are US faculty, and no English test is needed. Competition shifts to research experience, how specific the letters are, and the questions a statement of purpose raises.

3Starting point 3
Undergraduates in the UK, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada mostly study in English, so language is rarely the obstacle. What must be checked program by program is degree length, grading, and eligibility for the English waiver.

What to check in each of the five regions
UK and Australian degree classes are set only at graduation. Applicants submit grades to date, and offers are usually conditional on the final class meeting the requirement.

Timeline
Each program sets its own deadlines; the stages follow the common cycle of fall applications for entry the next year. Students in the US or overseas follow a similar rhythm, and F-1 students already in the US finish with a SEVIS transition instead of a visa.
Choose between a master's and a PhD, and take the TOEFL or IELTS for the first time.
Research or internships, the GRE or GMAT if needed, and a list of recommenders.
Summer research or an internship, the school list, and first drafts of essays.
Submit applications, follow up on letters, and prepare for interviews, alongside postgraduate options and the thesis.
Compare offers, complete the I-20, SEVIS fee, and visa, and submit certificates after graduation.
EDUBUS service
The service runs from setting a direction to receiving an offer and completing the status transition. All three starting points share one process; what changes is the emphasis at each stage.

Master's or PhD, coursework or research programs, with reach, match, and likely tiers set by background.
Research, internships, and coursework; choose recommenders and build relationships early.
TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or GMAT as each program requires, taking only the tests that matter.
Statement of purpose, research proposal, and CV; choosing and briefing recommenders.
Document checklist, credential verification, submission, and mock interviews.
Comparing offers and deciding, then the I-20, student visa, or SEVIS transition.
Application fees, GRE requirements, and deadlines are set by each program. At UC Irvine, the graduate application fee is $135 for US citizens and permanent residents and $155 for all other applicants, and only some programs require the GRE.
A counselor will identify what your starting point still needs, suggest a range of target programs, and lay out the main milestones from now to admission. Ask about service scope and fees through the form, by phone, or on WeChat.
Submit the transcript on the university's original 100-point scale without changes. Some programs set a floor; UCLA, for example, requires applicants from mainland China to have an overall average of at least 80. If an application portal asks for a GPA, follow that school's instructions; if it gives none, report the original grades and note the university's grading standard.
Yes. Apply in the fall with the current transcript; UCLA tells seniors not to wait for senior-year grades before applying. After admission, send official transcripts as instructed and submit the graduation certificate and Ministry of Education degree certificate after graduation.
CHSI is the credential verification body designated by China's Ministry of Education, and it issues verification reports for qualifications, degrees, and transcripts in Chinese and English. Not every school requires it; follow the admitting program's instructions, and apply early when it is needed so enrollment documents are not delayed.
It varies by school. At UC Irvine, the graduate division requires a TOEFL iBT score of at least 80 (4 on the new scale from January 2026), or an IELTS overall score of at least 7 with no module below 6. That is the division minimum; competitive programs often ask for more, so follow each program's published requirement.
It depends on the program. UC Irvine's graduate division states that only some programs require the GRE, and departments at the same university can differ; business programs usually look at the GMAT or GRE. Check each program during school selection and take only the tests that matter.
Yes. The published admission requirements of US graduate schools do not draw lines by 985 or 211 status; UCLA's stated requirement for applicants from mainland China is about grades. Competitiveness comes from grades, program fit, research or internship experience, and how specific the recommendation letters are.
Ask the course instructors and research advisors who know your work best. Letters are written and submitted by the recommenders themselves, and EDUBUS does not write them. Counselors help students prepare a factual list of courses, projects, and results for recommenders to refer to, and agree on timing early.
There are four steps: the school issues the I-20; you pay the I-901 SEVIS fee using information on the I-20, before the visa is issued; you pay the visa fee, complete the DS-160, and book the interview on the US embassy or consulate website; and you attend the interview with the original I-20. EDUBUS follows each step's documents through to departure.
There is no need to leave the country for a new visa. Staying at the same school, the school processes a change of education level and issues a new I-20, and the new program must start within five months of completing the current one. Moving to another school requires a SEVIS transfer, subject to the same five-month limit. Talk to the school's designated school official (DSO) early.
Research experience and recommendation letters. US undergraduates are exempt from English tests, so competition centers on research and how specific the letters are. At UC Irvine, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) helps students connect with faculty mentors; students generally commit 10 to 15 hours a week during the academic year, and most mentors ask for at least one year, so sophomore year is a good time to start.
Yes, but check each program. UCLA and UC Irvine require UK applicants to hold a First or Upper Second (2:1) honours degree, and UCLA does not accept three-year ordinary or pass degrees. EDUBUS checks each target program's rule during school selection so the application is not returned at the credential review stage.
