About The Pegasus School
The Pegasus School in Huntington Beach was founded in 1984 by Dr. Laura Hathaway with 40 students and now enrolls about 595 students from PK through grade 8. It is a co-educational, non-profit, nonsectarian day school with the motto "where bright minds soar". The school has chosen not to open a high school and focuses on the PK-8 years.
From pre-kindergarten, the lower school (PK-5) adds specialist classes in science, music, art, computer science, physical education, Spanish and library. Middle school (6-8) classes have 16 to 18 students; from grade 7, students choose two electives per quarter from more than 20 courses, and every middle schooler completes at least 10 hours of community service a year. NCES reports a 9.9:1 student-teacher ratio for 2023-24.

The Pegasus School entrance assessment and ISEE requirements
| Entry grade | Assessment |
|---|---|
| PK, kindergarten, grade 1 | One-on-one cognitive screening, then a possible classroom experience; no ISEE |
| Grades 2 / 3 / 4 | Primary 2 / 3 / 4 |
| Grades 5, 6 | Lower Level |

- The ISEE may be taken once per testing season and at most three times a year: the fall season (August to November) suits a first attempt, and the winter season starts in December, which leaves only December before the January 4 deadline.
- ERB offers online, paper-based and at-home testing; the Pegasus website does not say which formats it accepts, so check with the admission office before registering.
- Applicants to grades 3 and 4 may be invited to a shadow day; applicants to grades 6 to 8 with potential are interviewed by the middle school team after scores arrive.
EDUBUS sets the ISEE level from the entry grade, starts with a free practice test, plans a fall attempt and a December retake back from the January 4 deadline, and then prepares for the interview and shadow day. ISEE tutoring · Free practice test

The Pegasus School: Frequently Asked Questions
What test does The Pegasus School require?
The Pegasus School uses the ISEE for applicants to grades 2 through 8. Applicants to PK, kindergarten and grade 1 do not take the ISEE; they begin with a one-on-one cognitive screening, and children whose preliminary results show potential return for a classroom experience. The ISEE level follows the entry grade, and applicants here take the Primary, Lower or Middle Level.
Which ISEE level does a child from Irvine take when applying to The Pegasus School for grade 6?
Applicants to The Pegasus School for grade 6 take the ISEE Lower Level. The level follows the entry grade, not the current grade: grade 5 applicants also take the Lower Level, grade 7 applicants take the Middle Level, and applicants for grades 2, 3 and 4 take Primary 2, 3 and 4 respectively. By the school's published numbers, grade 6 has 0 to 8 openings a year, the most of any grade above grade 2, and applicants to grades 6 to 8 with potential are interviewed by the middle school team after scores arrive.
What ISEE score does The Pegasus School require?
The Pegasus School publishes no cut-off and describes a holistic review in which test scores are only a starting point. From EDUBUS's own records of past students' scores and admission outcomes, percentiles from 55 in the four scored sections of the ISEE give a realistic chance and 72 and above are competitive; this is a reference range, not a school threshold. No separate score deadline is listed, so plan for scores to reach the school before the January 4, 2027 application deadline.
Can the ISEE for The Pegasus School be taken online at home?
The Pegasus School's website does not say whether it accepts at-home ISEE scores, and it lists no on-campus test date. ERB offers online, paper-based and at-home testing; enter school code 054191 when registering, and confirm the accepted format with the admission office first. Applicants to PK through grade 1 who pass the cognitive screening return to campus for a classroom experience.
Does The Pegasus School accept F-1 international students?
The Pegasus School does not accept F-1 students: it does not issue I-20s, and every student must meet their own residency requirements.
How much is tuition at The Pegasus School for 2026-27, and is aid available?
Tuition at The Pegasus School for 2026-27 is $33,550 for new students and $33,500 for returning students, one price for PK through grade 8. Financial aid is need-based and applied for through Clarity, with a $60 fee; awards range from 5% to 100% of tuition and can also cover lunch, field trips, after-school activities, Extended Day, books, a loaner device and busing. New families submit the aid application by January 4, 2027, the same day as the admission application. The school states that admission applications are reviewed independently of financial need, though it cannot guarantee aid to every qualified admitted applicant.
When should an Irvine family start preparing for The Pegasus School?
For 2027-28, The Pegasus School's online application opens September 1, 2026 and closes January 4, 2027; the recommendation form and report card are due January 15, decisions are released February 26, and contracts are due March 12. No separate ISEE score deadline is listed, so Irvine families should take a first attempt in the fall season and keep December for a retake, making sure scores arrive before January 4. EDUBUS advises Irvine families applying to the school from its Irvine office, with ISEE preparation and interview coaching. The school is in Huntington Beach and publishes no bus routes, so time the drive from Irvine during school hours on your visit day.
