Twelve-Year Trend: Fewer Applicants, Admitted-Student GPA Roughly Flat

It reflects the GPAs admitted students actually earned; it is not an admission cutoff. At most campuses, fewer than 3 students from this school were admitted in many years, so the lines break in those years.

The largest change over twelve years is in the number of applicants. In fall 2014, 42 students applied to UC and 21 were admitted. Applications peaked at 58 in 2017. By 2025 the figures had fallen to 18 applicants and 9 admits, less than one third of the 2017 level. The average GPA of admitted students changed little, staying between 3.78 and 3.91 throughout the twelve years.
Taking three years together, from 2016 to 2018 a total of 158 students applied to UC and 94 were admitted, a systemwide admission rate of 59%; from 2023 to 2025, 76 applied and 48 were admitted, a rate of 63%. After applicant numbers were cut in half, admissions fell at every campus except UC Merced, where numbers are very small: UC San Diego dropped from 35 to 10 and UC Irvine from 41 to 10, while only UC Riverside held roughly steady, moving from 31 to 27. Admission rates at UC San Diego and UC Irvine also fell, from 33% to 19% and from 33% to 15%, respectively. Each of these periods includes one year left blank by UC; even counting the blank year at the maximum of 2 admits, the rates are only 22% and 18%.

First, UC Berkeley and UCLA received 66 and 106 applications over five years, respectively, but each published admission numbers for only one year (3 admits), with fewer than 3 in each of the other four years. The 5% and 3% in the table are lower bounds calculated from the published figures, not exact admission rates. Second, the campus with the most published enrollees is UC Irvine, with 12 over five years; 50 students enrolled systemwide over the five years, and enrollment at the other campuses was left blank in most years. Third, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara published admission numbers in all five years, making them the two most reliable sets of figures: UC Riverside received 72 applications and made 51 admissions, an admission rate of 71%, and UC Santa Barbara received 99 applications and made 21 admissions, an admission rate of 21%.
