Twelve-Year Trend: The Most Popular Campuses Have Tightened, and Admits Have Shifted Toward UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz
The chart below shows the average GPA of Orange Lutheran High School students admitted to each campus, year by year. It reflects the GPAs that admitted students actually earned; it is not a cutoff.

Over twelve years, the number of UC applicants from the school first rose and then fell. In fall 2014, 98 students applied to UC and 51 were admitted; applicants peaked at 140 in 2022 and returned to 108 in 2025, with 73 admits. Over the same period, the average applicant GPA rose from 3.78 to 3.90, while the average admitted GPA went from 3.96 to 3.97, essentially unchanged.
The biggest changes came at the most popular campuses. Looking at three-year totals, from 2016 to 2018 the UC Irvine admission rate for Orange Lutheran High School students was 43% (166 applications, 71 admits); from 2023 to 2025 it fell to 26% (231 applications, 61 admits). Over the same periods, UC San Diego fell from 32% to 19%, UCLA from 16% to 9%, and UC Santa Barbara from 41% to 28%. Meanwhile, the systemwide admission rate actually rose from 58% to 63%. The additional admits came mainly from UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside, whose three-year admit totals rose from 51 and 50 to 86 and 89, while combined admits to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego fell from 115 to 92.

From 2014 to 2025, the admit rate for Orange Lutheran High School applicants to UC Los Angeles fell from 17% to 8%, and to UC Berkeley fell from 21% to 11%; the rate at UC Irvine fell from 37% to 20%.

Three points stand out in this table. First, UCLA and UC Berkeley are the two hardest campuses for students from this school, with five-year admission rates of 10% and 13%. Second, UCLA is the UC campus where the most Orange Lutheran High School students enroll, with 30 students over five years, 6 more than the 24 at UC Irvine; 65% of students admitted to UCLA ultimately enrolled. Third, admitted students at UC San Diego and UC Irvine had average GPAs 0.35 and 0.33 higher than the school’s applicants, the largest gaps among the nine campuses, which shows that these two campuses admit students from the upper part of the school’s applicant pool.
