About TVT Community Day School (Tarbut V'Torah)

TVT Community Day School, formerly Tarbut V'Torah, was founded in 1991 by Holocaust survivor Irving Gelman. It is a pluralistic Jewish community day school in Irvine serving TK through grade 12, accredited by WASC and CAIS. The Lower School (TK-5) is on Bonita Canyon Drive and the Middle and Upper School (6-12) is on Federation Way, together a 21.5-acre campus across the street from UC Irvine.

The school runs a dual curriculum: alongside college-preparatory courses, Jewish Studies is required every year, and Hebrew is required from TK through grade 8 and optional in high school. The school welcomes families of all faiths, and Hebrew knowledge is not required for admission. The whole school gathers every Friday morning for Kabbalat Shabbat, a student-led service welcoming the Sabbath, and dismisses early on Fridays. The upper school profile lists 24 AP and 26 Honors courses, and the school does not rank its students.

TVT Community Day School (Tarbut V'Torah): Frequently Asked Questions

What test is required to apply to TVT Community Day School?

TVT Community Day School requires the ISEE for applicants to grades 2 through 11; the school code is 054346, and scores must come directly from the testing company. Applicants to TK, kindergarten and grade 1 do not take the ISEE: TK and kindergarten applicants join an on-campus group assessment, and grade 1 applicants may be asked to attend a student visit. Applicants to grades 6-11 also attend an interview or a shadow day.

Which ISEE level does an Irvine family take for each entry grade at TVT Community Day School, including grade 9?

TVT Community Day School applicants to grade 9 take the ISEE Upper Level. The level follows the grade a student is applying to, not the current grade: Primary 2, 3 and 4 for grades 2, 3 and 4, the Lower Level for grades 5 and 6, the Middle Level for grades 7 and 8, and the Upper Level for grades 9 through 11. The application steps on the website stop at grade 11 and do not say whether grade 12 transfers are accepted.

What ISEE score is needed for TVT Community Day School?

TVT Community Day School publishes no ISEE cut-off and states that test scores are one part of the review, weighed equally with the student visit, report cards, teacher questionnaires and faculty feedback. In EDUBUS's records of past students' scores and outcomes, percentiles from 45 in the four scored sections give a realistic chance, and 67 and above are competitive; this is an experience-based range, not a school threshold. The 2027-28 priority deadline for the application and documents is February 1, 2027, and EDUBUS recommends having ISEE scores in hand by then.

Can international students on an F-1 visa apply to TVT Community Day School?

TVT Community Day School accepts F-1 students: it is SEVP-certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and can issue I-20s, and the certified school list updated September 30, 2026 includes both its Lower Campus and its Middle and Upper Campus. The school website does not currently list seats or English requirements for international applicants, so families who need an F-1 visa should confirm with the admissions office before preparing an application.

What is TVT Community Day School tuition for 2026-27, and is financial aid available?

TVT Community Day School tuition for 2026-27 has three tiers: $37,285 for TK through grade 5, $41,085 for grades 6-8 and $47,385 for grades 9-12, with textbooks and supplies included. Financial aid is need-based and applied for through Clarity; the school says 33% of families receive aid and over $5 million is awarded each year. For new families the aid application opens December 1 and is due February 1, decisions arrive in early March with the enrollment contract, and families must reapply each year. The school states that it does not consider a family's financial circumstances in making admission decisions.

Where do graduates of TVT Community Day School in Irvine go to college?

TVT Community Day School reports that 90% of the 51 graduates in the Class of 2026 are attending four-year colleges. Colleges marked in the Upper School Profile 2026-27 as enrolling members of the Class of 2026 include Stanford University, Duke University, University of Chicago, Washington University in St Louis, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, University of Southern California, UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC Irvine; the school does not publish counts. The last four graduating classes have each been awarded over $2.7 million in scholarships and grants a year.

When should Irvine families start preparing to apply to TVT Community Day School?

TVT Community Day School opened applications for 2027-28 on October 1, 2026, and the priority deadline for the application and documents is February 1, 2027. Decisions come in late February for grades 6-11 and early March for TK-5, with rolling admission afterward while space remains. The Middle and Upper School open house is October 8, 2026 at 9:30 AM, and the Lower School open house is November 12 at 9:30 AM. The ISEE may be taken once per testing season, so the safe plan is a first attempt in the fall season (August to November) with the winter season kept as a second chance. EDUBUS counselors are based in Irvine and start with a free ISEE practice test, then plan ISEE preparation and interview coaching for Irvine families.
