JSerra Catholic High School uses the traditional sequence of algebra, geometry and Algebra 2. Algebra 2 comes in three versions: regular Algebra 2, which covers algebra only; Algebra 2/Trigonometry, which includes trigonometry; and Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors. This differs from the Integrated Math I, II and III sequence of the Irvine Unified School District, and grade-level equivalents between the two systems cannot be converted directly. The pathways differ in their starting points, which are determined jointly by middle school coursework, the HSPT and the April Challenge Exam. The regular pathway reaches Precalculus or Statistics in grade 12 without entering calculus; the honors pathway reaches AP Precalculus in grade 12; and only the fastest pathway, starting from Geometry Honors or Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors, reaches AP Calculus BC in high school.

The prerequisites follow three patterns. First, requirements between honors levels are relatively low: a B in Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors qualifies for AP Precalculus or PreCalculus Plus, and a C qualifies for regular Precalculus. Second, regular Algebra 2 does not include trigonometry, and the course catalog states that students who complete it cannot move directly to Precalculus or Introduction to College Math. Third, AP PreCalculus Plus is the shortcut to AP Calculus BC: an A in PreCalculus Plus allows a student to go directly to BC without taking AP Calculus AB.
Summer and Outside Courses
The school's summer session lasts six weeks and is offered in two sessions: beginning June 8 and June 29 in 2026, and June 14 and July 6 in 2027. Courses are mainly for remediation, with some courses for acceleration. The course descriptions for Geometry, Geometry Honors, Algebra 2, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors state that these courses count toward graduation requirements only when taken at JSerra; Algebra 1B may not be taken in the summer.
The rules for outside courses are stricter. Graduation requirements must be completed at JSerra Catholic High School. Courses taken elsewhere to accelerate or to satisfy prerequisites require prior approval from the assistant principal for academics and are not recorded on the JSerra transcript. The top of the math sequence at JSerra Catholic High School is AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics.
