AP Precalculus is a new introductory AP math course from the College Board. It covers polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric and polar functions, and function modeling. Its place in the sequence is clear: it is the next step after Enhanced Math II and the last preparation before AP Calculus AB and BC.

How AP Precalculus Differs from School Precalculus

The content range is similar. The difference lies in how students are tested and how deep the course goes. The AP version requires students to move freely among four representations of a function: graphs, equations, tables of values, and verbal descriptions of a situation. Many exam questions give a situation or a table and require students to build a model before solving, rather than giving a function to compute with. This is the point students find hardest to adjust to when moving from the school course to the AP course.

Where Students Struggle in AP Precalculus

The unit weight ruler above shows that the three units on the exam carry similar weights, so none can be skipped. In our teaching, lost points concentrate in two areas.

  • Trigonometric and polar functions: The unit circle, graph transformations, and conversion to polar coordinates require a great deal of fluency. Last-minute cramming has limited effect.
  • Function modeling: Students must turn a verbal description into a function model and then explain what the parameters mean in practice. This step tests understanding rather than computation. When a question asks what a value represents in the situation, students often cannot answer.

The unit on functions involving parameters, vectors, and matrices is not on the exam, but it is the foundation for parametric equations and vector-valued functions in Calculus BC, so the course still covers it.

How EDUBUS Teaches AP Precalculus

The course follows the College Board framework, with more class hours given to trigonometric and polar functions. Each unit ends with a unit test. After winter break, the class shifts to full practice that follows the exam structure. Multiple choice is used to control pacing, and free response (FRQ) is used to practice correct written form. Explanation questions in particular must be answered in complete sentences tied to the situation; a number alone earns no credit. Rules and techniques for the graphing calculator are practiced along the way, because a graphing calculator is required for multiple choice Part B and free response Part A.

When to Take AP Precalculus

Most students take this course in grade 10 or 11. Students on an accelerated path who finished Enhanced Math I in grade 8 can start earlier. Under the district pathway, students who finish Enhanced Math II must meet two of three requirements to enter this course: a B- or higher in every grading period, 85% or higher on the common final exam, and a passing score on the Standards for Mathematical Practice assessment. Students who take Math II in grade 10 must first pass the high school summer bridge course. The full requirements for both routes appear in the Irvine Unified School District math pathway explained. Course-selection rules differ somewhat by school; see the Irvine Unified School District high school guide. After this course, students choose AB or BC according to their goals. The difference between the two is explained on AP Calculus AB.

AP Precalculus Class Formats

6 to 8 student seminars with homework, 32 weeks, no spring break, ending before the AP exam; also 1-on-1, online or in person.

IUSD Course-Selection Rules for AP Precalculus

Which grade can take this AP at each school, what the prerequisites are, and how weighted GPA is calculated. Confirm with the school's current course catalog before choosing.

  • Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
Unweighted courses are scored A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1; the 28 AP courses and 11 weighted Honors courses are scored A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1. Weighted Honors courses are electives in grades 11 and 12; core courses in grades 9 and 10 are not weighted.
  • University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
Only AP courses and fourth-year world languages (French 4, Latin 4, Spanish 4, American Sign Language IV) add 1 point to the GPA, and the grade must be C or higher.

AP Precalculus: Frequently Asked Questions

What grade should Irvine students take AP Precalculus?

Grades 8 through 12, and most students enter after Enhanced Math II. Math acceleration and bridge rules differ by school within Irvine Unified School District (IUSD), so confirm your school's sequence in the IUSD high school guides before choosing a year. At EDUBUS, level and class are set by a placement assessment rather than by grade alone.

How is this different from a regular school precalculus class?

It is a College Board course with a fixed syllabus and a May exam; a regular precalculus class has neither. Three units are tested: polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and polar functions. A fourth unit on parameters, vectors, and matrices is taught but not tested.

What does the exam look like?

The exam runs 2 hours 55 minutes. Multiple choice has 42 questions worth about 63 percent; free response has 4 questions worth about 37 percent. A graphing calculator is required on multiple choice Part B and free response Part A, and is not permitted on the other sections.

Is a 5 realistic for Irvine public high school students?

It is among the more attainable AP math exams. In 2026, 82 percent of test takers worldwide scored 3 or higher and 29 percent scored 5. School-by-school rates appear in the At Irvine public high schools section above. Class hours follow the published unit weights, with the most time on polynomial and rational functions and on trigonometric and polar functions.

After finishing in Irvine, what comes next?

AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC. Students with a strong base who want to finish calculus early go straight to BC; students who are short on time take AB first. Either path is available in 6 to 8 student seminars or 1-on-1.
