How the UC Transfer GPA Is Calculated:Three Steps and Benchmarks
The UC transfer GPA counts only transferable courses, is weighted by units, and is truncated to two decimal places without rounding. The minimum is 2.4 for California residents and 2.8 for nonresidents, and admitted students at the most selective campuses have considerably higher GPAs.

The UC transfer GPA is the grade point average that the University of California (UC) uses to review transfer applications. It counts only college courses that transfer to UC, is weighted by units, and is truncated to two decimal places without rounding. As a result, it is not necessarily the same as the GPA on the community college (CC) transcript. The minimum GPA for UC transfer is 2.4 for California residents and 2.8 for nonresidents. At highly selective campuses such as UCLA, admitted community college transfer students have GPAs well above the minimum.
The Three-Step Method
This section lists the steps for calculating the transfer GPA, following the explanation on the UC website.
- Add up the unitsAdd the units of all UC-transferable courses.
- Calculate grade pointsMultiply the grade points for each course by its units, then add up the results for all courses.
- DivideDivide the total grade points by the total units and truncate the result to the hundredths place without rounding.
The UC website gives the example that 3.22576 is recorded as 3.22. The grade points for each letter grade are as follows.

Calculation Example
This section walks through the calculation with a hypothetical set of data. The courses, units, and grades below are examples only and do not represent any student’s actual record.

The courses counted in the GPA total 20 units, with 65.5 total grade points. 65.5 divided by 20 equals 3.275, which is recorded as 3.27 under UC rules. The physical education course is graded Pass, carries no grade points, and is not included in the calculation. The preparatory math course does not transfer to UC and is also excluded.
How D, F, and P/NP Grades Are Handled
This section explains how several special grades are treated in the GPA.
- D gradesD, D+, and D- count in the GPA at their corresponding grade points and also count toward units completed. However, a D does not satisfy the 7-course pattern and usually does not satisfy major or general education requirements.
- F gradesAn F counts in the GPA at 0.0 grade points.
- Pass gradesPass, Credit, and Satisfactory grades carry no grade points and are not included in the GPA calculation.
- P/NP limitPass/No Pass courses count toward transfer credit up to a maximum of 14 semester units or 21 quarter units.
Repeat Rules
This section explains how repeating a course affects the GPA, based on the UC Admissions transfer credit guidance for counselors.
- Grades that can be repeatedC-, D+, D, F, and NP.
- CalculationThe new grade replaces the original grade in the GPA; UC does not average the two.
- When a course cannot be repeatedA course with a grade of C cannot be repeated. After a C or higher has been earned in a higher-level course, the lower-level course cannot be repeated.
- Course contentThe repeated course must be similar in content to the original course, although the course title may differ.
- Reporting on the applicationBoth the original grade and the repeat grade must be reported accurately on the application.
Community colleges also have their own limits on the number of repeats, and the rules of the college the student attends apply.
When the GPA Is Evaluated During the Application
This section explains at which points during the application process the GPA is reviewed. Transfer students self-report all college courses and grades on the TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) and UC applications, and the information must be reported accurately. For fall 2027 entry, the key dates are as follows.

UC campuses generally release admission decisions by the end of April. After admission, students must still complete their remaining courses as required. TAG applicants may not earn any grade below a C in any term of the current academic year and must remain in good academic standing.
The Minimum Versus Actual Competitiveness
This section compares the UC minimum GPA with the actual admission profiles at each campus. The 2.4 and 2.8 figures are only the UC systemwide minimums, and some campuses and majors require more. The minimum TAG GPA ranges from 2.7 to 3.6 by campus; for example, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara require 3.4.
The median GPA of transfer students admitted to UCLA for fall 2025 was 3.91, with a middle 50% range of 3.77 to 4.00. By community college, the GPA ranges of admitted students are likewise concentrated at the high end:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GPA on the community college transcript the same as the UC transfer GPA?
Not necessarily. UC counts only courses that transfer to UC, so nontransferable courses are excluded. Courses graded Pass carry no grade points and are also excluded from the calculation. When the two sets of courses differ, the two GPAs will differ.
Must the original grade still be reported after a course is repeated?
Yes. UC requires applicants to report all courses accurately, including both the original grade and the repeat grade. In the GPA calculation, the new grade replaces the original grade rather than being averaged with it.
Do Pass grades lower the GPA?
No. UC does not assign grade points to Pass, Credit, or Satisfactory grades, so these courses are not included in the GPA. However, no more than 14 semester units of Pass/No Pass courses count toward transfer credit.
Can a student with a 3.5 GPA transfer from community college to UCLA?
The middle 50% GPA range of transfer students admitted to UCLA for fall 2025 was 3.77 to 4.00, with a median of 3.91. A 3.5 falls below this range. EDUBUS recommends also preparing an application plan for TAG campuses.
