Community College Summer Courses:Units, Scheduling, F-1 Rules
Summer courses help students reach the 30-unit TAG checkpoint and finish English and math early. UC requires the 60 units and the 7-course pattern to be completed by the end of the spring term before transfer, so the final summer is not a buffer.
- Deadline for UC minimum transfer requirements
- End of the spring term before transfer
- When TAG counts the 30 units
- End of summer in the application year (summer 2026 for the fall 2027 cycle)
- IVC summer 2026
- May 26 to August 8, 2026
- PCC summer 2027
- 8 weeks, starting June 21, 2027
- OCC minimum units for international students entering in summer
- 6 units
Community college summer courses can be used to fill unit gaps, complete English and math early, and lighten the load in the final spring term. UC evaluates transfer credit course by course, and transferable courses taken in summer count the same way as those taken in regular terms. However, UC requires the 60 semester units and the 7-course pattern to be completed by the end of the spring term before transfer. Courses taken in the last summer before transfer cannot be used to meet these minimum requirements.
The Role of Summer Courses in Transfer Planning
This section describes four common uses of summer courses in planning a transfer from a community college to UC.
- Reach the TAG unit checkpointThe Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) requires 30 semester units to be completed at the time of submission, counted as of the end of summer in the application year.
- Complete English and math earlyUC campuses recommend completing English and math early, and TAG requires 1 course in each to be completed by the end of fall in the application year.
- Control the unit load in the final springTAG requires that no more than 19 units remain for the final regular term, and taking more units in summer reduces that load in advance.
- Make up major preparation coursesPrerequisites that do not fit into regular terms can be taken in summer, but they must be checked on ASSIST first.
How UC Recognizes Summer Units
This section explains how summer course units and grades enter the UC transfer review.
Every California community college has a Transfer Course Agreement with UC that specifies which courses earn UC credit. A course taken in summer counts toward UC-transferable units in the same way as a regular-term course, as long as it is listed in the agreement. A course’s transferability and UC area designation can be checked on ASSIST; for instructions, see the ASSIST Tutorial.
The UC transfer GPA includes only UC-transferable courses, and grades from transferable courses taken in summer count as well. Pass or Credit grades carry no grade points, and no more than 14 of the 60 semester units may be graded P/NP.
UC states that Cal-GETC or IGETC courses may come from multiple California community colleges, and each course must be completed with a grade of C or better. Certification is handled by the last community college the student attends before transfer. When taking summer courses at another community college, students should check transferability on ASSIST under the college offering the course.
Deadlines are where summer course planning most often goes wrong. The table below compares key UC and TAG checkpoints, using the fall 2027 TAG cycle as the example.
| Checkpoint | Requirement | Do summer courses count? |
|---|---|---|
| 30 units at TAG submission | At least 30 semester units by the end of summer 2026 | Summer 2026 counts |
| TAG GPA for UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz | Calculated as of the end of summer 2026 | Summer 2026 grades count |
| TAG GPA for UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara | Calculated as of the end of fall 2026 | Summer 2026 grades are already included |
| TAG 60 units and the 7-course pattern | Completed before spring 2027 ends | Summer 2027 does not count |
| UC minimum transfer requirements | Completed by the end of the spring term before transfer | The last summer before transfer does not count |
Summer Considerations for International Students
This section explains whether F-1 students must take summer courses and how to maintain status during the summer.
Study in the States from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security explains the rule as follows. After completing a full academic year of fall and spring terms, an F-1 student may take summer as the annual vacation. During the annual vacation, the student may take more courses, fewer courses, or none, but must intend to register for the next term.
Students who begin their studies in spring or summer must enroll full time in summer courses if the school offers them. Community colleges do not all word this the same way. Saddleback College states that summer is optional for students who entered in fall or spring, and its annual budget excludes summer costs. Orange Coast College requires international students who enter in summer to take at least 6 units that summer.
- Rely on a written answerStudents who entered in spring should obtain written confirmation from the international student office of the enrollment requirement for their first summer.
- Communicate in advanceBefore moving, changing addresses, or traveling abroad in summer, confirm the required procedures with an international student advisor.
- Mind the course paceSummer at Pasadena City College lasts 8 weeks, compared with 16 weeks in spring and fall, so the same course moves about twice as fast.
- Budget separatelySummer tuition is charged per unit and should be listed separately in the budget; see F-1 Student Rules.
Scheduling Advice
This section outlines how to plan summer courses by academic year, using Irvine Valley College as the example. Summer 2026 at IVC runs from May 26 to August 8.
| Summer | Suggested plan | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First summer after enrollment | Make up any shortfall toward 30 units, giving priority to English composition or math | TAG counts the 30 units as of the end of summer in the application year |
| Summer before the application year | Take demanding prerequisites that must be completed early | Leaves room to finish English and math by fall and keep the final spring at no more than 19 units |
| Last summer before transfer | Do not schedule courses needed to meet minimum requirements | UC requires all minimum requirements to be completed by the end of the spring term |
Summer courses are compressed, and concentrating difficult courses in summer may affect grades and the transfer GPA. EDUBUS recommends taking only one or two summer courses that relate directly to the student’s goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UC accept units from community college summer courses?
UC decides whether a course earns transfer credit based on whether it appears in the Transfer Course Agreement, and UC-transferable courses taken in summer count the same way. Students should check each course's transferability and UC area designation on ASSIST. Grades in transferable courses also count toward the transfer GPA.
Is the last summer before transfer too late to make up courses?
It is too late for meeting minimum requirements. UC requires the 60 semester units and the 7-course pattern to be completed by the end of the spring term before transfer. For the fall 2027 cycle, TAG likewise requires the 60 units to be completed before spring 2027 ends.
Must F-1 international students take classes in the summer?
According to Study in the States from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, F-1 students who have completed a full academic year may take summer as their annual vacation and need not enroll. Students who begin their studies in spring or summer must enroll full time in summer if the school offers summer courses. Colleges word this differently, so the written answer from the student's international student office governs.
Do summer courses help with a TAG application?
Yes. Under the rules for the fall 2027 cycle, students must have completed 30 semester units by the time the TAG is submitted (end of summer 2026), and summer units count. The TAG GPA for UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz is also calculated as of the end of summer 2026.
Can a student take summer courses at a different community college?
Yes, but check first. UC states that Cal-GETC courses may come from multiple California community colleges, and transferability must be checked on ASSIST under the college offering the course. F-1 students should confirm with their own college's international student office before enrolling at another college.
