AP Scores and Transfer:Units, the 7-Course Pattern, and GE

High school AP exam scores of 3 or higher remain useful when a student transfers from a community college to UC. UC grants credit for these scores and allows them to be used for the matching areas of the 7-course pattern. A community college may also apply AP scores to some areas of Cal-GETC or IGETC. Two limits apply, however: only one of the two English composition courses may be satisfied with AP, and one exam can satisfy only one requirement.

UC Credit and 7-Course Pattern Areas by AP Exam

This section lists the units UC grants and the area of the 7-course pattern each AP exam can satisfy. The 7-course pattern consists of 2 English composition courses (UC-E), 1 mathematics course (UC-M), and 4 courses in the arts and humanities (UC-H), social and behavioral sciences (UC-B), and physical and biological sciences (UC-S).

UC Berkeley and UC Merced use semester units; the other campuses use quarter units. Even when an exam is listed under two areas, it can satisfy only one requirement. UC does not grant credit for the Precalculus exam introduced in 2024.

AP and the 7-Course Pattern

This section explains the rules for using AP in the 7-course pattern. The full requirements are described in the 7-Course Pattern.

• English limitOnly one of the two English composition courses may be satisfied with an AP score; the second must be completed in college.
• One exam, one requirementOne AP exam can satisfy only one requirement of the 7-course pattern.
• No double creditWhen a college course duplicates the content of an AP exam, UC grants credit only once.
• Low scores have no effectUC states that AP scores below 3 do not affect admission negatively.

For example, consider a student who scored 3 or higher on AP English Language, AP Calculus BC, and AP United States History. These three exams can satisfy 1 UC-E course, UC-M, and 1 of the 4 area courses, respectively. The student must still complete the second English composition course and the remaining 3 area courses at the community college.

How AP Affects the 60-Unit Minimum and the 80-Unit Limit

This section explains how AP units are treated when transfer units are calculated. The UC minimum for transfer is 60 semester units. UC accepts at most 70 semester units of lower-division coursework from non-UC institutions.

• Not counted toward the limitUC San Diego states that AP, IB, and A-Level units are not counted toward the unit limit, and a student will not be denied because of them.
• No upper-division statusUC Irvine states that AP units are not counted toward the lower-division unit limit and will not cause an applicant to be treated as an upper-division applicant.
• The 80-unit TAG limitTAG requires that transferable units not exceed 80 semester units. The matrix notes that a student with only community college coursework and AP, IB, or A-Level units will not exceed this limit.
• Graduation planningUC states that AP units are not counted toward the unit limits for declaring a major or for graduation.

The official pages reviewed for this guide do not state clearly whether AP units can count toward the 60-unit minimum. TAG also requires that at least 30 semester units be completed at a California community college. For these reasons, a plan should not rely on AP units to reach 60 units.

AP and Cal-GETC or IGETC

This section explains how AP applies to general education. Cal-GETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) applies to new community college students beginning in fall 2025. Students who enrolled earlier may continue to use IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum); see Cal-GETC General Education.

• How credit is determinedAn AP score of 3 or higher earns credit in the matching area once community college faculty determine that the exam is equivalent to their general education course.
• English compositionAP English can satisfy the English composition area but cannot satisfy the Cal-GETC critical thinking and composition requirement.
• One exam, one areaOne exam can satisfy only one general education area; a world language exam can satisfy both the humanities area and the language proficiency requirement.
• Language proficiencyCal-GETC no longer requires world language as an area, but it offers an optional language proficiency certification. An AP world language score of 3 or higher can demonstrate proficiency.
• Certifying collegeCal-GETC or IGETC certification is completed by the last community college the student attends before transfer.

Submitting Scores

Students report AP scores on the UC application and can still sign in to update them after submitting. After being admitted and accepting the offer, the student must send official AP scores to the campus of enrollment by July 15.
