Transferring from Community College to UC Santa Barbara

Transferring from a community college to UC Santa Barbara is moderately difficult overall. For Fall 2026, UC Santa Barbara received 18,870 transfer applications and admitted 11,620 students, an admission rate of 61.6%. Of the admitted transfer students, 92.2% came from California Community Colleges. This rate is lower than those of UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, and UC Merced, and higher than those of the other five undergraduate campuses. The differences in difficulty show up mainly at the major level: economics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering all have firm prerequisite requirements.

The University of California describes these figures as an admissions snapshot and cautions parents not to use them to predict an individual student’s chances of admission. The official UC page for Fall 2026 does not publish a GPA range for admitted transfer students. The UC Santa Barbara admissions office also does not publish a GPA distribution for admits and provides only reference standards.

The UC Santa Barbara FAQ page recommends a transferable GPA of 3.2 or higher for most majors and 3.6 or higher for engineering majors. For out-of-state students or students who are not attending a California community college, it recommends a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The UC Santa Barbara admission criteria page, however, states that a competitive GPA for most majors is 3.4 or higher. Because the two statements differ, planning should use the higher figure of 3.4. Selective Majors and Prerequisites

This section explains which UC Santa Barbara majors impose additional course and GPA requirements on transfer applicants.

The UC Santa Barbara admissions office lists Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, Economics, and Physics in the College of Letters and Science as selective majors. Selective majors require students to complete specified courses by the end of the spring term before transfer. For majors in the College of Engineering, competitiveness depends on the number of applicants each year, and the admissions office recommends earning high grades in major courses. The course names above describe UC Santa Barbara course content. The equivalent community college course numbers must be looked up in ASSIST, the official course articulation system for California public colleges and universities. Three rules deserve attention:

• Applicants to biology and economics should list that major as their first choice.
• Students not admitted to biology or economics may be admitted to an alternate major and should expect to complete their degree in that major.
• Students cannot change into a biological sciences major after enrolling.

Some majors admit students with pre-major status. The admissions office explains that pre-major status does not mean admission is more difficult, but after enrolling the student must still complete specified courses to enter the full major.

TAG

This section explains how to apply for the UC Santa Barbara transfer admission guarantee and which majors are excluded.

The Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is an admission guarantee that six UC campuses offer to California community college students. UC Santa Barbara participates in TAG. The main conditions for the Fall 2027 entry cycle are as follows:

• A transferable GPA of 3.4 by the end of the Fall 2026 term.
• TAG submitted through the UC Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP) between September 1 and 30, 2026.
• At least 30 semester units completed at the time of submission, and 1 English composition course (UC-E) and 1 mathematics course (UC-M) completed by the end of Fall 2026.
• The remaining 7-course pattern courses and 60 units completed by the end of Spring 2027, with no grade below C in any term of the current academic year.
• UC Santa Barbara accepts TAG only for fall entry and does not pre-review submissions; after submitting TAG, the student only needs to submit the UC application on time.

No major in the College of Creative Studies or the College of Engineering accepts TAG. In the College of Letters and Science, the Dance B.A. and B.F.A. and the Music B.M. also do not accept TAG. The Theater B.A. with a design emphasis and the B.F.A. in Acting are likewise excluded from TAG. Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics and Applied Probability also require a minimum GPA in major prerequisite courses. For College of Letters and Science majors without a pre-major stage, TAG also guarantees the major. For majors with a pre-major stage, TAG guarantees only pre-major status. UC Santa Barbara also has several campus-specific rules:

• It admits only junior-level transfer students, meaning students who have completed 60 to 89 semester units.
• The admissions office explains that students who have taken courses only at California community colleges do not need to worry about exceeding the lower-division unit limit.
• The application fee is $80 per campus, or $95 for international students.
• The College of Creative Studies requires a supplemental application, and the Dance, Music, and Theater B.F.A. programs require an audition.
