Spring Community College Entry:Deadlines and Transfer Timeline

Students who enter community college in spring can also plan a transfer from community college to the University of California. Transfer eligibility depends on units, the 7-course pattern, and GPA, not on the entry term. What spring entry actually affects is the timeline: the student must choose between a two-and-a-half-year route and a one-and-a-half-year route. The one-and-a-half-year route must also meet the unit milestone for the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG).

Spring 2027 Application Deadlines by College

This section lists the spring application deadlines for international students at five community colleges. Local students apply through each community college’s regular admission process, and those deadlines are published separately.

For reference, Santa Monica College’s published spring 2026 deadline for applicants abroad was January 5. The spring 2027 term at Irvine Valley College runs from January 19 to May 26. Registration for new and returning local students runs from November 6 to 16, 2026. After classes begin, students usually complete English and math placement first; see English and Math Placement.

Two Transfer Timelines

This section uses spring 2027 entry as an example to compare the two-and-a-half-year and one-and-a-half-year routes. UC requires 60 semester units and the 7-course pattern to be completed by the end of the spring term before transfer.

The two-and-a-half-year route has five regular semesters, which gives one extra semester to raise the GPA and complete major preparation courses. The one-and-a-half-year route has only three regular semesters and one summer. Under TAG rules, the final spring may require no more than 19 units. The one-and-a-half-year route therefore requires at least 41 units completed before the start of spring 2028.

Effects on TAG and TAP

This section uses the published TAG rules for the fall 2027 cycle as a reference. Conditions for later cycles follow the TAG matrix published at that time.

• 30-unit milestoneAt TAG submission (the end of summer in the application year), 30 semester units must be completed.
• English and mathBy the end of fall in the application year, 1 English composition course (UC-E) and 1 math course (UC-M) must be completed.
• Units in the final springThe final regular term may require no more than 19 units.
• Filing windowTAG is submitted from September 1 to 30 of the application year.

On the two-and-a-half-year route, the student has three semesters by the end of summer 2028, so reaching 30 units is comfortable. On the one-and-a-half-year route, the student must complete 30 units across spring and summer 2027 combined, and also complete English and math that fall.

Since May 2026, the UCLA Transfer Alliance Program (TAP) has required students to have attended college for at least two years after high school graduation. The one-and-a-half-year route falls short of two years of attendance, so certification is unlikely. See UCLA Transfer Alliance Program.

Students Well Suited to Spring Entry

• International studentsStudents who need time after high school graduation to prepare English scores, the I-20, or the visa.
• Students who missed the fall deadlineStudents whose fall application deadline has passed but who do not want to wait until the next fall.
• Local students who need to adjustStudents with other commitments in the fall term, or who want to adapt to American classrooms first.
• Students with competitive goalsStudents who want two and a half years to earn a higher GPA.

International students whose English scores do not yet meet the standard may also consider spring entry. Saddleback College no longer requires English scores at the time of application; students without scores enter the intensive ESL program. Students who already have scores such as TOEFL iBT 52, IELTS 4.5, or Duolingo 80 may be exempt from the college’s ESL courses. ESL courses take up semester time, and this should be factored in before choosing the one-and-a-half-year route.

Points to Note

• F-1 summer ruleStudy in the States states that F-1 students who begin their studies in spring must enroll full time in summer when the school offers summer courses. Saddleback College, however, states that summer is optional for spring entrants. The written answer of the student’s own international student office is the final authority; see Summer Courses.
• Full-time requirementOrange Coast College and Saddleback College require F-1 students to take at least 12 units in each fall and spring semester.
• Different start datesIrvine Valley College begins classes on January 19, and Pasadena City College begins on February 17.
• Registration priorityNew students register in later time slots, and popular courses may already be full, so spring entrants should book an advisor appointment early.
