AP Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary course. It combines biology, chemistry, earth science, and social and economic issues. It covers nine units: the living world: ecosystems; the living world: biodiversity; populations; earth systems and resources; land and water use; energy resources and consumption; atmospheric pollution; aquatic and terrestrial pollution; and global change.

Where Students Struggle in AP Environmental Science
AP Environmental Science covers many scattered topics, but the real source of lost points is not the amount of memorization.
- Calculation questions: The exam includes calculations of pollutant concentration, energy efficiency, and population growth rate, and students must show the full unit conversion. Students often lose points by dropping units.
- Solution questions: Free response asks students to propose a solution to an environmental problem and explain the reasoning. The answer must name specific, actionable measures. General statements earn no credit.
- Precise use of terms: Many terms have loose meanings in everyday use. The exam requires students to use them according to their scientific definitions.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Environmental Science
The course moves unit by unit. Calculation questions are trained as a separate block, so students build one consistent way of writing out unit conversions. Each unit includes real case studies and data charts, and students practice reading trends from a chart and explaining their causes. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams, and free responses are graded item by item against the scoring guidelines.
Who AP Environmental Science Is For
AP Environmental Science suits two groups of students. The first group wants to add a science AP but has limited time for schoolwork. The math demand is lower than in physics or chemistry. The second group plans to apply in environmental science, public policy, or sustainability, and the course content relates directly to those majors. Note that an easy start does not mean an easy 5. Which grade can take this AP at each school, what the prerequisites are, and how weighted GPA is calculated. Confirm with the school's current course catalog before choosing.
- Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.

Yes. The course is interdisciplinary and concept-driven, covering ecosystems, population, resources, pollution, and global change, and it demands less math and lab background than AP Chemistry or AP Physics 1. How is the exam structured?
The exam runs 2 hours 40 minutes, one of the shorter AP exams. Multiple choice has 80 questions worth 60 percent; free response has 3 questions worth 40 percent, covering experimental design, data analysis, and calculation. A calculator is allowed.
Is it mostly memorization?
