AP Calculus AB is equivalent to one semester of college calculus. It is the most common AP math course for applicants in STEM, business, and economics. The course starts from limits and covers the two main topics of derivatives and integrals, along with their applications.
What AP Calculus AB Covers
The course follows the College Board framework for the eight AB units: limits and continuity; differentiation: definition and fundamental properties; differentiation: composite, implicit, and inverse functions; contextual applications of differentiation; analytical applications of differentiation; integration and accumulation of change; differential equations; and applications of integration. The unit weight ruler above shows that analytical applications of differentiation and integration and accumulation of change carry the highest weights, and class hours are allocated in the same proportion.
Where Students Struggle in AP Calculus AB
Worldwide, about 65% of students score 3 or higher, which is not high among AP math courses. Lost points usually do not come from computation. They come from the three areas below.
- Explaining concepts: Questions ask students to explain continuity using the definition of a limit, or to state what a derivative means in context. Students can compute the answer but cannot state it clearly.
- Writing free response (FRQ): Free response carries close to half of the AB score, and credit is awarded step by step. An answer that omits the justification, the units, or the domain loses points even when the result is correct.
- Applications of integration: Area, volume, and accumulation problems require students to set up the integral before computing it. This modeling step is where most points are lost.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Calculus AB
The course follows the unit order, and each unit includes homework and a unit test. In spring, the class shifts to exam training. Students first practice the four common free-response question types one at a time, then take full timed practice exams, with each answer graded for correct written form. Calculator and no-calculator questions are trained separately, because the two sections call for different strategies.
AP Calculus AB or BC
AB equals one semester of college calculus; BC equals two. Students whose school math path has just reached AP Precalculus, who are aiming for STEM or business, and whose schedule is tight take AB. Which grade can take this AP at each school, what the prerequisites are, and how weighted GPA is calculated. Confirm with the school's current course catalog before choosing.
- Northwood High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. Grade 10 is limited to four: AP Art History, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Music Theory, and AP Precalculus, assigned as seats allow. The remaining AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12, and most require a current teacher's signed recommendation on the course request form.
- Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
