AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based mechanics course that does not require calculus. For most students, it is their first AP physics course. The course covers kinematics, Newton’s laws, work, energy, and momentum, torque and rotation, and oscillations and fluids.
What AP Physics 1 Covers
The course follows the College Board framework through seven mechanics units and a fluids unit. The unit weight ruler above shows that force and translational dynamics and work, energy, and power carry the highest weights, at 18% to 23% each, and class hours are allocated in the same proportion.
Where Students Struggle in AP Physics 1
Worldwide, about 68% of students score 3 or higher, but students often find the course harder than that number suggests. The reason is that the exam tests students differently from school science courses.
- Explanation questions: The exam asks students to describe a physical process in words and explain why a conclusion holds. Formulas and numbers alone earn no credit. This is the point that students whose first language is Chinese often find hardest to adjust to.
- Force analysis: Most errors in mechanics start from an incorrect free-body diagram, not from a calculation mistake.
- Experimental design: Free response includes experimental design and data analysis questions. Students must propose a measurement plan and explain the sources of error.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Physics 1
The course moves unit by unit. In each unit, students first build the concepts and the habit of force analysis, then move to quantitative calculation. From the start of the school year, free response is used to train written explanation, checked item by item against the scoring guidelines. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams, and grading focuses on whether the logic of each explanation is complete. A separate three-week AP Physics 1 summer pre-study is offered for grades 10 to 11, covering kinematics and dynamics in advance.
AP Physics 1 Course Order and Next Steps
Students with no physics background can take this course directly, but algebra and trigonometry must be solid. After this course, students can move on to AP Physics 2 (algebra-based, electricity and magnetism and modern physics) or AP Physics C (calculus-based, the first choice for STEM). For support in school physics, see high school science. Students interested in competitions can go on to foundation training for Physics Bowl and F=ma, the qualifying exam for the U.S. Physics Olympiad; see physics competitions. Course availability at each school appears in the availability section below and in the Irvine Unified School District high school guide.
AP Physics 1 Class Formats
6 to 8 student seminars with homework, 32 weeks, no spring break, ending before the AP exam; also 1-on-1, online or in person.

IUSD Course-Selection Rules for AP Physics 1
Which grade can take this AP at each school, what the prerequisites are, and how weighted GPA is calculated. Confirm with the school's current course catalog before choosing.
- Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
AP Physics 1: Frequently Asked Questions
What grade should Irvine students take AP Physics 1?
Grades 9 through 12, with most students taking it in grade 10 or 11. The course is algebra-based and does not require calculus, but it does require fluent algebra and trigonometry. Students whose math is not yet there should strengthen Algebra II first.
Can a student with no physics background take it?
Yes. This is the first physics AP and it starts from kinematics. Content density is higher than a regular school physics class: forces and translational dynamics and work, energy, and power each carry 18 to 23 percent. A three-week summer pre-study is available for grades 10 and 11.
How is the exam structured?
The exam runs 3 hours, with 42 multiple choice questions and 4 free response questions each worth 50 percent, and a calculator is allowed throughout. Free response covers mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design, and qualitative-quantitative translation. Experimental design and written explanation are the common trouble spots.
How hard is a 5 for Irvine public high school students?
In 2026, 68 percent scored 3 or higher worldwide and 19 percent scored 5. Pass rates at each Irvine public high school appear in the At Irvine public high schools section above. The barrier to a 5 is written reasoning: formulas and numbers alone do not earn full credit, and students must explain the physical argument behind each step.
After finishing AP Physics 1 in Irvine, what comes next?
Students continuing in physics take AP Physics 2; students heading for engineering or the physical sciences take AP Physics C, which is calculus-based and requires calculus taken before or alongside it. For school physics grades, see high school science.
