AP Chemistry is equivalent to an introductory college general chemistry course. It is a core science AP for applicants heading toward pre-med, chemical engineering, materials science, and biology. The course covers the nine College Board units in sequence, with training in lab data analysis and free response (FRQ).

The nine units start from atomic structure and chemical bonding, move through the properties of substances and mixtures, chemical reactions, kinetics, and thermochemistry, and then cover equilibrium, acids and bases, and thermodynamics and electrochemistry. Where Students Struggle in AP Chemistry
- Acids, bases, and equilibrium: Calculations for buffer solutions, titration curves, and solubility products involve long chains of steps. One mistake in the middle makes the whole answer wrong. This is where lost points are most concentrated.
- Lab work and data analysis: The exam includes many questions based on experimental data. Students must explain what they observe, evaluate sources of error, and propose improvements, rather than simply apply a formula.
- Particle-level explanations: Questions often ask students to explain a large-scale observation with a particle-level diagram or written explanation. Incomplete answers to these questions are a common source of lost points.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Chemistry
The course moves unit by unit. Acids, bases, and equilibrium receive extra class hours, and calculation problems are broken down and practiced step by step. Each unit includes lab data analysis practice. From the start of the school year, free responses are written to the scoring guidelines. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams. A separate three-week AP Chemistry summer pre-study is offered for grades 10 to 11. Students who finish atomic structure and chemical reactions in advance find the fall workload noticeably lighter.

- Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
