Troy High School Math Pathways:
Algebra 1 to AP Calculus BC

The Fullerton Joint Union High School District uses the traditional algebra, geometry, and Algebra 2 sequence, with courses named Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, not the Integrated Math I / II / III used in Irvine districts. This point must be clear from the start: families moving from Irvine often match Math II to Geometry and end up miscalculating placement by a full year. The Troy High School 2026-27 course list states the two advanced pathways very clearly, noting directly after each course name which calculus course it leads to. This page explains three math pathways, two entry points into calculus, and two available catch-up windows.

Three Math Pathways

Standard route (Algebra 1 in grade 9)

  1. Grade 9: Algebra 1; students who need more support may take Algebra Foundations 1 and Algebra Foundations 2 over two years, which together satisfy the Algebra 1 graduation requirement
  2. Grade 10: Geometry
  3. Grade 11: Algebra 2
  4. Grade 12: AP Precalculus or Probability & Statistics

Accelerated route (Algebra 1 completed in middle school)

  1. Grade 9: Geometry or Geometry Honors
  2. Grade 10: Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 Honors
  3. Grade 11: Pre-Calculus Honors or AP Precalculus
  4. Grade 12: AP Calculus AB or BC, or AP Statistics

Troy Tech and international programs route (Algebra 1 and Geometry completed in middle school)

  1. Grade 9: Algebra 2 Honors, the recommended 9th-grade starting point listed in the IB course progressions
  2. Grade 10: Pre-Calculus Honors or AP Precalculus
  3. Grade 11: AP Calculus AB or BC; students sit the IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL exam from this course
  4. Grade 12: AP Statistics or Multivariable Calculus Honors
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District uses the traditional Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 sequence rather than the Integrated Math I/II/III sequence used in Irvine-area districts. District policy requires students to take mathematics continuously until they have earned 30 credits; students who completed Algebra 1 in middle school may skip Algebra 1, but the 30-credit graduation requirement still applies. The 2026-27 course catalog spells out two advanced routes: Pre-Calculus Honors leads to AP Calculus AB, and AP Precalculus leads to AP Calculus BC.

Note that students with a weaker foundation have a slower-starting pathway: Algebra Foundations 1 and Algebra Foundations 2 are completed over two years and together satisfy the Algebra 1 graduation requirement, which amounts to stretching each semester of Algebra 1 into a full year. Students on this pathway reach at most Algebra 2 by grade 12 and do not enter calculus.

Entry Requirements for AP Calculus

Score thresholds for each courseAnnounced at the school's annual February registration presentation; every course description page reads "see registration presentation," and specific cutoff scores are not published on the school website

Catch-Up Windows

Troy High School has no acceleration route like the summer math bridge courses in the Irvine Unified School District. Summer school at the school is mainly for credit recovery, and the only course incoming grade 9 students may take in the summer is Health. Catching up must therefore happen during the school year, and there are two windows.

The first window is in grades 9 to 10: moving from regular Geometry or Algebra 2 into Geometry Honors or Algebra 2 Honors. Moving up is evaluated on semester performance, and after school starts, students may only move down a level, not up, so the change must be made during the February course selection window each year rather than after school begins.

The second window is in grade 11: skipping Pre-Calculus Honors and entering AP Precalculus directly, which changes the grade 12 endpoint from AP Calculus AB to AP Calculus BC. The course list already states which calculus course each of these two pathways leads to, so this choice amounts to deciding in advance which AP exam the student will take in grade 12.

Students who miss both windows can still take AP Statistics or Probability & Statistics in grade 12. Both courses count as UC A-G category c mathematics, and the 2026 pass rate for AP Statistics was 98.2%.

Computer Science and Data Science Pathway

Computer science courses at Troy High School are not grouped under mathematics; they form one department with cybersecurity and engineering, and they are the backbone of three of the six pathways in the Troy Tech magnet. The shared starting course for all grade 9 Troy Tech students is AP Computer Science Principles, which had 448 exams taken in 2026, the most of any AP course at the school.

  • AP Computer Science Principles: grades 9-12, UC A-G category d (laboratory science); the common starting course for all 9th-grade Troy Tech students; in 2026, 448 exams were taken and 94.4% scored 3 or higher
  • AP Computer Science A: grades 10-12, UC A-G category c (mathematics); in 2026, 237 exams were taken and 99.2% scored 3 or higher
  • Cambridge Advanced Computer Science AS Level (grades 11-12) and A Level (grade 12): UC A-G category c
  • Computer Science IB SL: grades 11-12, UC A-G category d
  • Networking Security Essentials Honors: grades 10-12; prepares students for the Cisco CCST Networking and Cybersecurity certifications
  • AP Cybersecurity: grades 11-12; prepares students for the CompTIA Security+ certification
  • Mechatronics Honors: grades 10-12; the core course of the Engineering pathway
  • Cambridge Design & Technology AS Level (grades 10-12) and A Level (grades 11-12): prepares students for the SolidWorks CSWA certification

The differences in UC A-G category are worth noting: AP Computer Science A and the two Cambridge Advanced Computer Science courses count as category c (mathematics); AP Computer Science Principles, Computer Science IB SL, and AP Cybersecurity count as category d (laboratory science); Mechatronics Honors and Networking Security Essentials Honors count as category g electives; and the two Cambridge Design & Technology courses count as category f (visual and performing arts). When building a schedule, these courses can be used to fill different A-G categories at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Troy High School use Integrated Math or the traditional algebra and geometry sequence?

The traditional sequence. Fullerton Joint Union High School District rules call for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in order, not the Integrated Math I, II, and III used in Irvine districts. As a result, the course names parents see at Troy High School are Geometry Honors and Algebra 2 Honors rather than names such as Accelerated Math II, and grade-level equivalents between the two systems cannot be converted directly.

When Irvine families compare Troy High School with the high schools in their own district, are the math pathways the same?

No. This school is not part of the Irvine Unified School District. At Troy High School, the earliest a student can take AP Calculus is grade 11, and only if the student has already completed Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school: the student enters Algebra 2 Honors in grade 9, takes Pre-Calculus Honors or AP Precalculus in grade 10, takes AP Calculus AB or BC in grade 11, and may take AP Statistics or Multivariable Calculus Honors in grade 12.

What is the difference between Pre-Calculus Honors and AP Precalculus at Troy High School?

They lead to different calculus courses. The Troy High School 2026-27 course list notes directly after each course name that Pre-Calculus Honors leads to AP Calculus AB and AP Precalculus leads to AP Calculus BC. Homework loads also differ: the school's course descriptions state 45 to 90 minutes of homework per day for Pre-Calculus Honors and about 30 minutes per day for AP Precalculus. Pre-Calculus Honors is open to grades 9 to 12, and AP Precalculus begins in grade 10.

At Troy High School, can a student placed in regular math in grade 9 still catch up to the accelerated pathway?

There are two windows, and neither is wide. Summer school at Troy High School is mainly for credit recovery, district rules count a maximum of 15 credits per summer toward graduation requirements, and the district requires math courses to be taken continuously until 30 credits are completed. The first window is to keep grades in grades 9 to 10 at a level that qualifies for the honors level; the second is to enter AP Precalculus directly in grade 11 so as to take AP Calculus BC in grade 12. Specific grade cutoffs are announced at the registration presentation each February.

What is Multivariable Calculus Honors at Troy High School?

It is a follow-on course that Troy High School offers for grade 12 students who have completed AP Calculus BC, and it is open to grades 11 to 12. The first semester covers multivariable and vector calculus, including partial derivatives and double and triple integrals; the second semester moves to linear algebra and differential equations, covering eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and first- and second-order linear equations. The course content corresponds to Math 250A and Math 250B at California State University, Fullerton.

Data verified on 2026-09-21. Course catalogs are updated each spring; prerequisites follow the school's current Course of Study.
