Troy High School Courses: 2026-27 Course Map and Selection Rules

The Troy High School 2026-27 Course Offerings Sheet lists 145 courses across 17 subject areas. Unlike Irvine high schools, this school’s course list places four levels side by side, Honors, AP, IB, and Cambridge, and many courses correspond to more than one exam. This page explains the course selection rules and graduation requirements first and then presents the complete course map. The rules are where parents most often make mistakes.

Course Selection Rules

Course load	Students in grades 9 through 11 must take 6 courses each semester; students in grade 12 who are on track to graduate may take 5, one of which may be an ROP or community college course
Extended schedule for Troy Tech	Troy Tech students follow an extended-day schedule and take one additional Troy Tech pathway course each semester for at least three years; Troy Tech students on a six-period schedule must earn at least 25 credits per semester, and those on a seven-period schedule at least 30
Troy Tech course sequence	All 9th-grade Troy Tech students start with AP Computer Science Principles; from grade 10 they choose one of six pathways and take a pathway course each year
Symbols on the course list	The 2026-27 course catalog uses symbols to mark requirements: a single asterisk means course prerequisites apply, a double asterisk means teacher recommendation or selection is required, a triple asterisk means IB Diploma students only, and a caret means Cambridge AICE Diploma students only. Placement in 9th-grade honors courses is determined by the incoming freshman honors test; current students are evaluated on semester performance
Credit calculation	Each course passed earns 5 credits per semester; up to 40 credits per semester and up to 15 credits per summer may count toward graduation
Changing levels and dropping courses	After school starts, students may request only two kinds of changes: dropping an extra course, or moving from Honors, AP, IB, or Cambridge down to the standard level (space permitting). Students may not add courses or move up a level. Under district policy, a level change is not considered a drop
Outside courses	Each outside course requires prior approval, and the student must carry the minimum course load in the district at the same time; up to 40 credits of outside learning experiences over all four years of high school may count toward graduation, and ROP courses are exempt from this limit. Outside grades do not count toward GPA, and credits from principal-approved community college courses are not recorded on the high school transcript
Repeating a course	When a course is repeated, both the original and the new grade remain on the transcript and both count toward GPA
Number of science courses	The course catalog does not cap the number of science courses a student may take each year; the practical limit is the 6 to 7 periods available each semester

Add and Drop Deadlines for the 2026-27 School Year

Fall semester: 8/10-8/13 Submit schedule errors, drop requests, or level-change requests through the designated Google Form, which closes at 3:00 p.m. on August 13; After 8/13 The form is closed; requests must be made in person during counselor drop-in hours; 8/28 District deadline to drop a course, 3:00 p.m. (end of week 3); 9/18 District deadline to change levels, 3:00 p.m. (end of week 6), space permitting. The spring semester follows the district-wide rules: End of week 3 District-wide rule: last day to drop a course without an F; a level change is not considered a drop; Within week 3 Schedule corrections are accepted only in six cases: a missing graduation-requirement course, a missing college-requirement course, a failed prerequisite, a special program (varsity athletics, music ensembles, ROP, and similar), a course already completed in summer school, or a scheduling error.

Students must complete eight semesters and take at least 5 courses in each of the final two semesters, earning at least 40 credits across them. Of the 30 mathematics credits, at least one year must be Algebra 1 or higher; the 20 science credits must include 10 credits of life science and 10 credits of physical science, both laboratory courses; the social science sequence is 10 credits of World History in grade 9 or 10, 10 credits of US History in grade 11, and 5 credits each of American Government and Economics in grade 12.

Graduation requirements and college admission requirements are two separate standards. The Fullerton Joint Union High School District requires only 2 years of science, 3 years of math, and 1 year chosen from world language, arts, or career technical education. The A-G requirements of the University of California and the California State University, by contrast, call for 2 years of the same world language (3 years recommended by UC), 1 year of visual and performing arts, 3 years of math (4 years recommended by UC), and 2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended by UC), with a C or higher in every course and at least 15 A-G courses, 11 of which must be completed before grade 12. Course selection should follow the A-G standard, not the graduation standard.

In the pathways below, CP refers to College Prep, the regular level; Honors refers to honors courses; AP refers to Advanced Placement courses; and IB and Cambridge refer to the International Baccalaureate and Cambridge International course systems.

The IB Diploma Programme: A Separate Two-Year System

All IB courses are two years long and are taught only in grades 11 and 12; courses in grades 9 to 10 are recommended preparation listed officially by the school, not IB courses themselves. The school’s IB course progression chart lists the recommended grade 9 combination as English 1 Honors Cambridge; Chinese 1, French 1, or Spanish 1; AP Computer Science Principles; Biology Honors or Cambridge Advanced Biology; and Algebra 2 Honors or Geometry Honors. For grade 10, it lists Cambridge Advanced English AS; the second year of a world language; International Business Honors or AP Business with Personal Finance; AP Computer Science A, Mechatronics Honors, or Chemistry Honors; and Pre-Calculus Honors or AP Precalculus.

In addition to the subject exams, the IB Diploma requires the Theory of Knowledge course, a 4,000-word Extended Essay, 18 continuous months of Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) experiences plus a CAS project, and the Group 4 Collaborative Sciences Project that all candidates complete each January. Diploma candidates must sit exams in 2 to 3 SL courses and 3 to 4 HL courses, and HL courses must be completed in grade 12.

Cambridge A Level and the AICE Diploma: Another Two-Year System

The school centers its Cambridge program on A Level courses and exams, which is uncommon among Cambridge schools in the United States. The AICE Diploma requires a two-course sequence in each of three groups, plus the core course Cambridge AS Global Perspectives & Research, and passing all Cambridge exams for the courses taken; it may be completed over four years.

Strong A Level exam results can earn college credit; the University of California system recognizes up to 12 quarter units, with specific policies set by each campus. The AICE Diploma pathway chart published by the school lays out the year for each course in detail: in grade 9, Cambridge Advanced Biology AS and English 1 Honors Cambridge; in grade 10, Biology A Level, Design & Technology AS, English AS, History AS, Media Studies AS, or International Business AS; in grade 11, English Language A Level, AP Psychology (counted as an AS), AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, Computer Science AS, Design & Technology A Level, and the core course Global Perspectives & Research AS; and in grade 12, the second course of each sequence. Two rules deserve attention: AP Spanish and AP Chinese count for only 1 point, so students who use them for the language group must add one more AS course from any group and take its exam; and the two-course psychology sequence can count toward either the first group or the third group.

World Languages

Chinese (Mandarin) 1-2 + Chinese IB SL + AP Chinese Language and Culture (equivalent to a fourth year)
French 1-2 + French IB SL + AP French Language and Culture (equivalent to a fourth year)
Spanish 1-3 + Spanish IB SL + AP Spanish Language and Culture (equivalent to a fourth year)

All three languages conclude with an AP course in the fourth year. Chinese and French are offered only through the second year plus IB SL, while Spanish adds a third year. The UC A-G requirements call for two years of the same language, with three recommended, so students who start at level 1 in grade 9 must continue at least through grade 10.

Course Selection Principles Recommended by EDUBUS

First, in grade 9 only three decisions matter: the math starting point, whether science follows Biology Honors or Cambridge Advanced Biology, and which world language to take. Other courses can be chosen by interest. Second, before course selection in grade 10, the student must choose between IB and Cambridge; this is the decision point officially designated by the school, and the course sequences of the two systems begin to diverge in grade 10. Third, Troy Tech students should use the seventh period only for pathway courses and should not force extra academic courses into it; schedule conflicts are common. Fourth, do not force advanced courses for the weighting alone: weighting applies only to A, B, and C grades, and a D earns only 1 point on both scales.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Troy High School, what are the minimum and maximum number of courses per semester?

Under Fullerton Joint Union High School District rules, Troy High School students in grades 9 to 11 must take a full load of 6 courses each semester, and students in grade 12 who are on track to graduate may take 5, one of which may be an ROP course or a community college course. Troy Tech students follow an extended schedule and take one additional pathway course each semester for at least three years: students taking six periods must earn at least 25 credits per semester, and students taking seven periods must earn at least 30.

Can a student still change the schedule at Troy High School after school starts?

Only within a narrow range. After school starts at Troy High School, a student may request only two things: dropping an extra course, or moving down from Honors, AP, IB, or Cambridge to the regular level (subject to space). A student cannot add a course or move up a level. For fall 2026, requests were submitted through a designated Google Form from August 10 to August 13 at 3 p.m.; after that, the form closed and students had to see a counselor in person. The district-wide deadlines are August 28 at 3 p.m. for dropping a course and September 18 at 3 p.m. for moving down a level.

Can courses taken outside school or at a community college appear on the Troy High School transcript?

There are two cases. Each outside learning experience must be approved in advance, and the student must be enrolled in the district minimum schedule at the same time; a maximum of 40 credits over all four years of high school may count toward graduation requirements. ROP courses are not subject to this cap, but outside grades do not count in the GPA. Community college Special Admit courses approved by the principal, and the free dual enrollment courses of Fullerton College and Cypress College, are not recorded on the Troy High School transcript and do not affect the high school GPA or the UC A-G requirements.

How do the Troy High School rules for repeating a course differ from those at Irvine high schools?

The difference is large. Under Fullerton Joint Union High School District rules, when a student repeats a course at Troy High School, both the original grade and the new grade remain on the transcript and both count in the district GPA; credit earned by repeating counts only as elective credit and cannot satisfy a subject's minimum credit requirement a second time. In the Irvine Unified School District, when the original grade is a D or F, the new grade replaces it in the GPA calculation. The two practices cannot be mixed.

What do the asterisks on the Troy High School course list mean?

The Troy High School 2026-27 course list uses four symbols to mark requirements: a single asterisk means the course prerequisites must be met, a double asterisk means a teacher recommendation or tryout is required, a triple asterisk means the course is limited to IB Diploma students, and a caret means the course is limited to Cambridge AICE Diploma students.
