The 2026-27 Oxford Academy course selection list includes 178 courses. The college center publishes it during course selection season, listing each course’s number, UC A-G category, grades offered, prerequisites, and weighting. The largest difference from other public high schools in Orange County is that core courses at this school are not tiered: all students take the same honors courses, and choices come in the pathway, world language, electives, and the grade 12 combination. Course Selection Rules

The Anaheim Union High School District graduation requirement is 220 credits, with at least 60 credits per year in grades 9 through 11 and at least 50 credits in grade 12.

Civic Engagement / Service Learning is listed as an optional course in the school's 2026-27 course selection materials. Note that graduation requirements and college admission requirements are two separate standards: district graduation requires only a D-, while Oxford Academy requires a C or higher in every course, and the University of California and California State University a-g courses require a C- or higher. In the 2024-25 school year, 99.5% of Oxford Academy graduates completed the a-g courses.

At Oxford Academy, the suffix H in a course name indicates Honors, P indicates regular College Prep, and ES indicates embedded Ethnic Studies. The prefix DE indicates a Cypress College dual enrollment course, and an asterisk after a course name marks a weighted course certified by the University of California.

Two practical considerations apply when choosing a pathway. First, Software Systems and Development is the only pathway that allows students to take an AP course in grade 9, and it is exempt from the two-AP limit in grade 10, which makes it the most favorable for the weighted GPA. Second, the first two courses of the Biomedical pathway count toward UC A-G category d laboratory science, adding a layer of insurance beyond the three-year laboratory science requirement; courses in the Engineering and Business pathways mostly count toward category g electives.

How many courses does an Oxford Academy student take each semester?
Oxford Academy fills all 8 periods every year from grade 7 through grade 12, and students must fill all 8 slots during course selection without leaving any empty. Grades 11 and 12 carry an additional rule: each year a student must take at least 6 district courses taught in person on campus, and dual enrollment and ROP courses do not count, so students who choose on-campus embedded dual enrollment courses must schedule at least 7 courses. Students in grades 11 and 12 who meet the 6-course on-campus requirement may replace periods 7 and 8 with a free period or a Minimum Day.
When Irvine families compare Oxford Academy with their district high school, is the freedom of course selection the same?
No. Oxford Academy is not part of the Irvine Unified School District; it is a magnet school in the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD). It requires every student to choose one of four pathways, Biomedical, Business and Entrepreneurship, Engineering, or Software Systems and Development, in grade 9 or grade 10 and take it for three consecutive years. During course selection, students rank all four pathways; the first choice is not guaranteed, and students who list no alternatives are assigned by the school. Changing pathways depends on whether the target pathway has openings that year, which the course selection guide explicitly states is not guaranteed, and the three-year requirement still applies after a change, so the later a student changes, the harder it becomes to complete three years before grade 12 ends. What happens if a student falls behind in Oxford Academy honors courses?
Core courses at Oxford Academy exist only at the honors level, and the only exit to a different track is in math: students who earn a C or lower in the first semester of Integrated Math 1-2 H move to regular Integrated Math 2 the following year and then continue on the regular sequence. Other subjects have no regular course to move down to. District rules allow level changes within the same subject at any point in the semester, but dropping a course or moving to an unrelated course after the first grading period is recorded on the transcript as WF and counted in the GPA. The school also offers tutoring before and after school, a daily Connections period, Saturday Academy, and peer tutoring in the library on Monday mornings.
How do dual enrollment courses work at Oxford Academy? Do they take up schedule slots?
Cypress College dual enrollment courses at Oxford Academy are free and available in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Only six groups are embedded on campus, meaning they meet on campus during the school day: Chinese CHIN 203/204, English ENGL 104, Ethnic Studies ETHS 101, three paired course groups, and Multivariable Calculus with Linear Algebra. These courses occupy schedule slots but do not count toward the 6 on-campus courses required in grades 11 and 12, so choosing one means scheduling an additional course. All other dual enrollment courses are taken through the district online program or after school.
Can courses taken outside the school or online appear on the Oxford Academy transcript?
There are two cases. The district's own online courses (eLearning) can, with a maximum of 2 per semester. During course selection, students must choose the online version whose course number begins with 900 and ends with the letter P. In April the district sends a confirmation email that the student must answer, or the enrollment is canceled automatically, and the student and parent must then sign an online learning agreement. Credit from outside institutions is recognized under the district's transfer credit rules: 150 to 180 hours of instruction convert to 10 credits, at most 70 credits are recognized per year, and courses must come from accredited schools.
