AP Biology is equivalent to an introductory college biology course. It is a core science AP for applicants heading toward pre-med, biomedical engineering, and environmental science. The course follows the eight College Board units, with training in science practices and free response (FRQ).
What AP Biology Covers
The eight units, in order, are the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, cellular energetics, cell communication and the cell cycle, heredity, gene expression and regulation, natural selection, and ecology. The unit weight ruler above shows that natural selection carries 13% to 20%, the highest weight of any unit. Cellular energetics and gene expression and regulation each carry 12% to 16% and follow closely.
Where Students Struggle in AP Biology
AP Biology is often mistaken for a memorization subject. In practice, the exam tests experimental analysis and argument.
- Experimental design and data interpretation: Many questions present experimental results. Students must judge whether a conclusion holds, propose a control group, or explain anomalous data.
- Argument in free response: Answers must lay out a chain of cause and effect. For example, a student explains how a gene mutation changes protein structure and how that change affects cell function. A conclusion without the reasoning earns no credit.
- Integration across units: Questions on natural selection and ecology are often combined with heredity and gene expression. Students must connect material from earlier units.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Biology
The course moves unit by unit. Each unit includes lab case studies and data analysis practice. From the start of the school year, students practice writing free responses to the scoring guidelines. Heredity and gene expression receive extra class hours, because these two areas have the longest chains of concepts. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams, and grading focuses on whether each argument is complete.
AP Biology Course Planning
We recommend that students finish school biology before starting AP Biology. A chemistry foundation helps with cellular energetics and molecular biology, but it is not a strict prerequisite. The order relative to AP Chemistry depends on the school’s course sequence; students who take both usually take chemistry first and biology second. - Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
