About RISE

RISE is run by Boston University Summer Term for high school juniors and lasts six weeks. Internship students join a faculty lab for an individual project at about 40 hours a week; Practicum students combine lectures with group research, and past Practicum subjects included Computational Neurobiology and Data Science. In 2027, residential students arrive June 27 and finish August 6, and most students live in the university dorms.

The program says about 190 students attended in 2026 out of thousands of applicants, but it does not publish the exact number of applicants, so no admission rate can be given. RISE is limited to US citizens and legal permanent residents. It charges tuition: in 2026 the total was $10,735 for residential students and $6,415 for commuters, plus a $75 application fee, and limited aid is awarded based on financial need.

All students present at a closing poster symposium; the program is noncredit and awards a certificate of completion. EDUBUS recommends treating RISE as a selective, tuition-based research program and preparing it alongside free programs such as Simons and RSI to spread application risk.

How to Apply to RISE

  • Internship applicants list three faculty members of interest. Before the application opens in December, browse research in the relevant Boston University departments and pick projects that connect to your coursework or experience.
  • The three essays are capped at 300, 250 and 200 words, and only one recommendation is required. Ask the teacher or research mentor who knows your science work best, and leave plenty of time before the February 3 deadline.
  • Families who need aid must submit the aid application with the program application; email requests are not accepted. Once 2027 rates are posted on December 17, work out the total cost before committing.

Application Support for RISE

EDUBUS starts with an assessment of grades, competitions and research, then decides which programs to aim for and which to hold as back-ups. We then guide each application form, essay, qualifying problem set and interview, and help turn the summer into part of the college application.
