The Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) is run by RockEDU at The Rockefeller University in Manhattan for high school juniors and seniors. It lasts seven weeks, full time Monday through Friday, at about 35 hours a week. The 32 scholars form 4 research teams led by scientists from Rockefeller, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell Medicine; students develop their own research questions within the team’s theme and finish with a poster presentation at a symposium.
SSRP accepts 32 students each year, and the number of applicants and the admission rate are not published; selection includes an online application, recommendations and online interviews in March. There is no GPA requirement, the application and program are free, and students receive a transit card; stipends are not guaranteed and may go to students in financial hardship. Students from outside the region are encouraged to apply, but the program does not help with transportation, housing or visas.
Note that Rockefeller does not permit SSRP research findings to be used in high school science competitions. EDUBUS recommends treating SSRP as team-based laboratory training; students who want to compete with a project should arrange separate research for that purpose.
