About Clark Scholars

The Anson L. Clark Scholars Program is run by Texas Tech University on its campus in Lubbock, Texas. The seven-week residential program is open to rising high school seniors and recent high school graduates, who gain hands-on research experience with experienced faculty and attend weekly seminars and weekend activities. The 2027 program runs June 20 to August 5.

The program admits only 12 scholars a year, and the number of applicants and the admission rate are not published. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and at least 17 by the start date. Scholars pay no participation fees, room and board are provided, and a $750 stipend follows a completed research report; families cover only the $25 application fee, travel and personal expenses.

The application asks for a lot: three recommendations, test scores, essays and a top-five activities list, and scores that arrive after the deadline are not accepted. The 2027 application opens January 2 and closes February 15. EDUBUS recommends that juniors finish standardized testing in the fall to leave time for the January application.

How to Apply to Clark Scholars

  • Clark requires three recommendations, at least two from teachers. Line up recommenders before the application opens on January 2, and let them know the deadline is February 15.
  • Test scores received after the deadline are not accepted. Send scores early, and if you have no SAT or ACT, have at least a PSAT or PACT score ready.
  • The program strictly prohibits applicants from contacting Texas Tech faculty directly about Clark Scholars; questions go to the program office. Put your interest in specific research areas into the essays instead of reaching out to professors.

Application Support for Clark Scholars

EDUBUS starts with an assessment of grades, competitions and research, then decides which programs to aim for and which to hold as back-ups. We then guide each application form, essay, qualifying problem set and interview, and help turn the summer into part of the college application.
