Economics for Leaders (EFL) is run by the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) on college campuses as a one-week residential program, with an online version as well. The course combines economic concepts, economic reasoning and leadership theory, and teaches students to apply economic analysis to public policy decisions. 2026 sites included UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, Yale, Duke and others.
EFL admits current sophomores and juniors and accepts international students. FTE says there are roughly two applicants for each available spot and admits only one student per high school to a given site; it does not publish an admission rate. Residential programs cost $2,800 and the online version $900; scholarships are based mainly on financial need, typically $100 to $2,000 for residential programs, and go only to US citizens or those who reside in the US. Applications for 2027 open in December 2026.
Compared with paid business programs such as Wharton’s or LaunchX, EFL costs less, and a one-week program is easy to fit around other summer plans. The EFL website says college admission officers value selective programs like it; that is the program’s own claim, not a statement from any admissions office. EDUBUS recommends planning for EFL as an introduction to economics and public policy.
