The 2026-27 course catalog of Crean Lutheran High School is contained in the school’s Academic Handbook & Curriculum Guide. Each course entry lists the course number, grade levels, credits, level, and prerequisites, and the school also publishes a separate Course Offerings list. This page uses the official University of California (UC) A-G course list as its base, adds the grade levels and prerequisites from the school catalog course by course, and includes the theology courses and school-required courses that are not on the A-G list. The overall picture of the UC list comes first.
UC A-G refers to the seven course categories that the University of California and California State University require of high school students: a history and social science, b English, c mathematics, d laboratory science, e language other than English, f visual and performing arts, and g college-preparatory elective.

Graduation Requirements (27 Credits)
The school counts a full-year course as 1 credit and a semester course as 0.5 credit. The School Profile states that students take an average of 7 credits per year.

Full-year courses earn 1 credit and semester courses earn 0.5 credit, for a total of 27 credits. At least 8 of the 27 credits must be earned in academic or theology courses taken at the school. AP Human Geography does not count toward the 2.5-credit social science requirement, and AP Seminar and AP Research do not count toward the 4-credit English requirement. A failing grade in any course required for graduation must be remediated.
The graduation requirements and UC admission requirements are two separate standards. The table below places them side by side; the UC column comes from the University of California admissions website.

EDUBUS recommends scheduling courses to UC’s recommended level rather than to the school’s graduation standard: 4 years of mathematics and 3 years of world language. The school’s science requirement is already 3 years, above UC’s minimum. Theology occupies one course slot every year, and physical education, Cornerstone, and health take another 3 credits, so the schedule is tighter than at a public high school. This needs to be built into planning from grade 9.
Theology Courses and UC A-G
The school's course catalog states that these five theology courses "have not been added to the UC a-g list." A course-by-course check against the UC 2026-27 A-G list found no course with the same or a similar title. Honors Ethics on the UC list is a g (college-preparatory elective) course that the catalog places among history and social science electives; it is not a theology course and cannot replace theology credit.
The four-year theology sequence

Online (asynchronous) theology courses require a cumulative unweighted academic GPA of 3.0 or higher; the school recommends on-campus or hybrid versions whenever possible. The Cornerstone course and the health course are each worth half a credit and are also not on the UC list. The school’s rigorous sample schedule recommends completing both in the summer before enrollment to free a slot in the grade 9 schedule.

The school does not publish specific dates for the annual course selection window. Individual counselor meetings for grade 10 take place from February to March and cover course selection for the following year, so that period can be treated as the selection window.
Four-Year Pathways by Subject
In the pathways below, CP means College Prep, Honors means honors level, and AP means Advanced Placement.
English

The honors English sequence begins in grade 9, but the grade 9 course, Honors Survey of Literature & Composition, is a school-designated honors course that requires passing the English placement test after admission. Honors English in grades 10 through 12 consists of UC-approved honors courses, with a prerequisite of an A- or higher in the preceding CP English course or a B- or higher in the preceding honors English course. AP English Language and Composition is offered in grade 11, and AP English Literature and Composition is open only to grade 12.
Science
- Grade 9: Biology; students who pass the science placement test may take Honors Biology
- Grade 10: Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Physics, or Honors Physics; Principles of Physical Science and Anatomy & Physiology are also options
- Grade 11: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, AP Environmental Science, or Honors Astronomy
- Grade 12: AP Physics C: Mechanics, or an AP science course not taken in grade 11
Graduation requires 3 years of science (one physical science, one life science, and one science elective). Engineering courses belong to the science department and are built mainly on PLTW (Project Lead The Way): Honors Introduction to Engineering Design (grades 10-12), Honors Principles of Engineering (grades 11-12), and Honors Aerospace Engineering (grade 12) are open only to Engineering Cohort students. AP Computer Science Principles is available from grade 9 and AP Cybersecurity from grade 11. The school does not offer AP Computer Science A. AP Biology and AP Environmental Science both require the biology and chemistry prerequisites to be met, and AP Physics C: Mechanics also requires the precalculus requirement to be met and Honors Calculus to be completed or taken concurrently.
Social science
- Grade 9: social science is not required; AP Human Geography is optional, and the school recommends it for freshmen who pass the English honors placement test
- Grade 10: World History, Honors World History, or AP World History: Modern

Social science uses a uniform prerequisite for honors and AP courses: an A- or higher in the preceding CP social science course, or a B- or higher in the preceding honors or AP social science course. For Honors World History and AP World History: Modern in grade 10, the school looks at English grades or AP Human Geography grades. AP Seminar requires a score of 3 or higher on the AP Human Geography or AP World History exam and is the first course of AP Capstone.
World Languages
- Mandarin I through III, Honors Mandarin IV, and AP Chinese Language and Culture; Mandarin I is designed for students who do not speak or read Chinese
- Spanish I through III, Honors Spanish IV, and AP Spanish Language and Culture
- American Sign Language I through III and Honors American Sign Language IV; the school notes that some colleges do not accept American Sign Language as a world language
- Latin: the course catalog states that it is offered through St. John Bosco; the UC list includes Latin I and Honors Latin III
Incoming freshmen are placed in Level I of each language by default. Students with prior study may take a placement test after admission to enter Level II directly: Spanish has 55 multiple-choice questions (50 minutes); Mandarin has 15 multiple-choice and 2 fill-in-the-blank questions (40 minutes, covering Integrated Chinese Level I Part I); American Sign Language uses an interview-style assessment (30 minutes). The school states that a score of 3 or higher on a world language AP exam also satisfies the two-year world language graduation requirement. UC A-G requires two years of the same world language and recommends three; the school’s graduation requirement is also 2 credits in the same language. Mandarin I through III, Spanish II through III, and American Sign Language I through III taken for dual credit are weighted as honors courses at the school but are regular courses on the UC list.
