Twelfth-grade students at Irvine high schools are submitting early applications due October 15 and November 1, and colleges differ widely on recommendation letters: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University each require two teacher letters, the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill require one, and the University of California does not accept letters at the application stage, although UC Berkeley invites some applicants to submit them between October and early December. This article compares the official requirements, explains how the Common App recommender system works, and outlines the request process at Irvine high schools.
What happened
On September 25, 2026, Common App updated its first-year requirements grid for the 2026-27 cycle. The grid lists, college by college, the number of teacher evaluations (TE), other evaluations (OE), the midyear report (MR), and the counselor recommendation (CR), and notes that all member institutions require counselors to submit the School Report and Final Report forms. The grid gives only counts, not who qualifies as a recommender; the rules are on each college’s admission pages.
Early deadlines cluster on November 1 and 2 (see Brief: Early Deadlines Split Between November 1 and 2), and public universities such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill close as early as October 15. Recommenders submit letters directly, and students cannot speed up a teacher’s work, so requests must leave a margin before the deadline.
What it means for Irvine families
The 12th-grade page at Northwood High School states that counselors visit classes to explain how to schedule a conference and how to request a counselor letter of recommendation when one is needed. The school also reminds students to launch their University of California and California State University applications from CaliforniaColleges.edu so that Northwood coursework is imported. At the other four Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) high schools, the process follows each counseling office’s announcements; see the Northwood High School guide and the other school guides.
The School Report submitted by the counselor is accompanied by the school’s profile; the 2026-27 editions are reviewed in Irvine 2026-27 School Profiles: Five Things to Read.
Requirements by college
The table lists only what each college states on its website; anything not listed is governed by the college’s own pages.
| College | Teacher letters | Counselor materials | Additional letters |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIT | Two; MIT recommends one from a math or science teacher and one from a humanities, social science, or language teacher, but this is not required | A counselor letter accompanies the Secondary School Report (SSR); an application is not disadvantaged if the school has none | An optional third letter for different or additional context; most applicants and most admitted students submit none |
| Stanford | Two, from academic teachers; Stanford recommends grade 11 or 12 teachers in English, math, science, world language, or history/social studies; a grade 10 teacher is acceptable if the course was Honors, AP, or IB | The School Report and counselor recommendation are submitted by the counselor or another school administrator | One optional letter, submitted as an “Other Recommender” in Common App |
| USC | One, from the school counselor or a teacher at the student’s school; some programs require more | See the college website | See the college website |
| UNC Chapel Hill | One, from a teacher in a core academic area such as English, math, science, social science, or world language | See the college website | See the college website |
| UC Berkeley | Not submitted with the application; applicants invited between October and early December may submit two, one from an academic teacher and the second from anyone the student selects | Not applicable | Due January 10, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time; students without letters are not at a disadvantage |
Letters of recommendation are not among the 13 factors the University of California publishes for application review. The UC Berkeley page states that students without a letter are not at a disadvantage but encourages invited students to use the opportunity.
The Common App recommender system
Common App divides recommenders into four types, and students invite each one and assign them to specific colleges:
- Counselor: a student may invite one, who submits school forms, uploads transcripts, and tracks progress; schools that use partner platforms submit through those platforms.
- Teacher: invited individually by the student and assigned to specific colleges; not all colleges require teacher recommendations.
- Other recommender: coaches, employers, and college access advisors; not all colleges accept letters from other recommenders.
- Advisor: up to three, who may review the in-progress application but submit no forms; colleges receive no information about advisors.
MIT does not use Common App. Letters go through the recommendation form in the MIT application portal, and MIT also accepts third-party services such as Naviance, SCOIR, and Parchment, or email. MIT states that students may submit the application without waiting for recommenders and that materials arriving after the deadline are still attached to the application. Stanford prefers online submission through Common App or the school’s partner system and also accepts email.
Timeline
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Now | Ask teachers; the October 15 and November 1 early deadlines are two to four weeks away |
| November 1 | MIT Early Action closes; decisions are released in mid-December |
| October to early December | UC Berkeley sends recommendation invitations to selected applicants |
| January 10, 2027 | UC Berkeley letters are due |
| February 15, 2027 | Stanford midyear transcript due for Regular Decision applicants and those deferred from Restrictive Early Action |
EDUBUS recommendations
Choose teachers by each target college’s subject rules. Stanford recommends grade 11 or 12 academic teachers, MIT recommends one STEM and one humanities letter, and UNC requires a core-subject teacher. Two letters from 11th-grade teachers, one in a STEM subject and one in the humanities, satisfy all of these at once.
Ask now and state the deadline. The earliest early deadlines fall on October 15, and teachers receive requests from several students at the same time. A request that includes the list of colleges, the application plan, and the deadlines allows the teacher to sequence the work.
Submit a third letter only when it adds a new perspective. MIT states that most admitted students submit no supplemental recommendation, and Stanford accepts only one additional letter. A letter from a coach or employer should cover what teachers cannot see rather than repeat the transcript.
Do not send letters to the University of California. Letters are not among the 13 UC review factors, and UC Berkeley accepts them only from invited students. The UC application centers on the Personal Insight Questions; see Brief: UC PIQs Remain Four of Eight, 350 Words Each.
