The University of California (UC) first-year application for fall 2027 admission enters its submission period on October 1, with a deadline of November 30. Under the rules on the UC admissions website, the Personal Insight Questions in the application ask students to answer four of eight questions, with each response limited to 350 words. For grade 12 students in the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD), these four responses are the largest writing component of the University of California application.

Who Is Affected

All first-year applicants to the University of California. The website states three rules:

  • Students answer only four of the eight questions, and each student decides which four.
  • Each response may be up to 350 words.
  • All eight questions carry equal weight; the choice of questions confers no advantage or disadvantage in the review.

In order, the eight questions address leadership experience, creativity, the student’s greatest talent or skill, making use of an educational opportunity or overcoming an educational barrier, the most significant challenge faced and its effect on academic achievement, an academic subject that inspires the student, contributions to the school or community, and strengths not yet reflected elsewhere in the application.

The application also has a separate additional comments field. The website explains that this field is not an essay; it is meant for explaining special circumstances or anything that may be unclear in other parts of the application.

What to Do Now

Choose questions by experience, not by guessing at preferences. The website states clearly that all questions are treated equally, so students should choose the four that best reflect their own experiences.

Avoid repetition across the four responses. Together, the four responses form one set of materials, and they work best when each shows a different side of the student, such as academic interests, extracurricular commitment, and personal background.

Plan separately from the Common App personal essay. The two differ in length and in how the questions are asked. This year’s Common App prompts are covered in Brief: The Seven Common App Essay Prompts Are Unchanged This Year. The complete University of California timeline is in University of California Application Timeline: From August 1 to May 1 of the Following Year.
