Common App has confirmed that the seven personal essay prompts for 2026-27 are identical to last year’s, and the prompts are posted on its essay prompts page. For 12th-grade students in the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) who plan to submit early applications in early November, now is the time to settle on a prompt and finish a first draft.
Who is affected
All students applying to private colleges or out-of-state universities through Common App. The seven prompts address:
- A background, identity, interest, or talent that is deeply meaningful to the student.
- A challenge, setback, or failure the student faced, and what the student learned from it.
- A time the student questioned or challenged a belief or idea.
- Something someone did for the student that made the student unexpectedly grateful.
- An accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked personal growth and a new understanding of the student or others.
- A topic or concept so engaging that the student loses track of time.
- A topic of the student’s choice.
Common App published the share of applicants choosing each prompt last season: the topic of choice was the most popular at 28%, followed by the setback prompt at 23%, the personal growth prompt at 20%, and the background and identity prompt at 18%. The intellectual curiosity prompt drew 5%, and the gratitude and challenging-a-belief prompts drew 3% each.
What to do now
Choose the story first, then match it to a prompt. The seven prompts cover broad ground, and the topic of choice has no restriction, so the prompt number itself is not the main point. First identify an experience that shows the student’s individual character, then see which prompt it fits most closely.
Confirm whether each target college requires the personal essay. Common App states that each college can require the personal essay or make it optional; after a college is added to My Colleges, its requirement appears in the Writing section. Students may submit the essay even when a college does not require it.
Work backward from early deadlines. Early application deadlines at private universities such as the University of Southern California and Stanford University fall on November 1 or 2; the dates are in Brief: Early Deadlines Split Between November 1 and 2.
