The University of California (UC) application follows a different rhythm from private universities: there is no early round, every applicant shares the same deadline, and a single application can be sent to multiple campuses. For Irvine students in grade 12, the timeline contains seven dates that require advance planning.
Seven Dates
The dates below come from the first-year application page for fall 2027 on the University of California admissions website.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| August 1 | Application opens and students can begin filling it out |
| November 1 to 30 | Filing period for fall 2027 applications |
| November 30 | Submission deadline (11:59 p.m. Pacific Time) |
| March 2 | Deadline to submit the FAFSA, the California Dream Act Application, and the GPA Verification Form |
| March 1 to 31 | Admission decisions released; some campuses may release earlier |
| May 1 | Deadline for admitted first-year students to submit the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) |
| July 1 / July 15 | Final transcripts due / official AP and IB scores due |
What to Do at Each Stage
August to October: prepare materials rather than rushing to submit. The application requires every high school course and grade to be entered one by one. This step is the most error-prone and the most time-consuming. Students should obtain their transcripts in August and check them carefully, especially grade 9 courses and grades and the levels of world language courses. Complete first drafts of the Personal Insight Questions during this stage.
November: submit. The filing period falls in November, and system traffic peaks in the final week, so students should not wait until November 29. Some information can still be updated after submission, but courses and grades cannot be changed once submitted.
December to February: maintain grades. UC admission relies primarily on grades through the end of grade 11, but offers of admission are conditional, and a drop in grade 12 grades can lead to a rescinded offer. This semester is not one in which students can ease off.
March: decisions and financial aid. March 2 is the deadline for financial aid materials, nearly the same time decisions arrive. Families who need financial aid cannot wait for an admission offer before preparing.
April to May 1: compare and confirm. Compare admission and financial aid offers from each campus as they arrive, then submit the Statement of Intent to Register by May 1.
July: final steps. Send final transcripts by July 1 and official AP and IB scores by July 15. AP scores affect credit awarded after enrollment and course placement.
How UC Differs from Private University Applications
The University of California has no early round, so binding commitments do not arise. For the types of early application at private universities and how binding each one is, see Early Decision vs. Early Action. Also note that the University of California does not consider SAT or ACT scores in admission decisions; for the history of this policy, see UC Does Not Consider the SAT or ACT.
EDUBUS Recommendation
In the view of EDUBUS advisors, the real bottleneck in this timeline is not November but August. Entering every course and grade and revising the personal statements over several rounds both take time, and once grade 12 begins in September, students must also manage coursework, standardized test retakes, and recommendation letters. Moving preparation into the summer is the only way to make November manageable. For full planning, see College Admissions Planning; for essay guidance, see College Application Essays.
