The Emory University admission office announced its 2026-27 short-answer questions on its official blog on August 1, keeping the questions from the previous cycle: one required academic-interest question and one personal question chosen from four options. Early Decision I closes November 1, 2026, with decisions released by December 15. Irvine 12th graders who rank Emory first have just over two weeks to finish the personal statement and both short answers.

Who Is Affected by the Emory Short Answers

Twelfth graders applying to Emory through the Common App. Dates for each round are as follows:

Early Decision II January 1, 2027 January 6 February 15
Regular Decision January 1, 2027 February 10 April 1

One application can be submitted to Emory College in Atlanta, to Oxford College, or to both, and an applicant may apply Early Decision to one and Regular Decision to the other. Both Early Decision plans are binding. The Emory University Scholar Programs deadline is November 15.

What to Do Now About the Emory Short Answers

Write the academic-interest response. The required question asks which academic areas the student wants to explore at Emory and why, with a recommended length of 200 words.

Choose one of the four personal questions. The second short answer is 150 words, and the four options address an experience participating in and improving a community, an experience intentionally expanding cultural awareness, how the student might contribute to Emory’s mission of service to humanity, and how the student navigates disagreement in a way that promotes progress. The questions are paraphrased here; the full text is on the admission blog. Topic selection and revision are covered by the EDUBUS College Essay Bootcamp.

Confirm testing and recommendations. Testing is optional for the 2026-27 cycle; applicants who submit scores may self-report them, and Emory superscores both the SAT and the ACT. For Early Decision I, scores from November exams typically arrive in time. Recommendations must come from two core academic teachers. Early-application strategy is covered by University Admissions Planning.
