Carleton College’s admission pages state that Fall Early Decision application and financial aid materials must be submitted or postmarked by November 15, with decisions posted December 15; Carleton charges no application fee and has published essay advice from the admissions staff who read applications. Irvine 12th graders with Carleton as a first choice have less than four weeks to finish the main essay.

Who Is Affected by the Carleton Early Decision Deadline

The deadline affects high school seniors applying through the Common Application, the QuestBridge Application, or the Coalition Application, which Carleton treats equally. The dates for each round are:

Round Application and financial aid materials Decision Confirm enrollment
Fall Early Decision November 15 December 15 January 15, 2027
Winter Early Decision January 15, 2027 February 15 March 1
Regular Decision January 15, 2027 April 1 May 1

Early Decision is binding, and there are three possible outcomes: admit, defer, and deny. Deferred students are automatically reconsidered in Regular Decision, and denied students should not reapply in Regular Decision.

What to Do Now About the Carleton Early Decision Deadline

Revise the main essay against the readers’ advice. Carleton’s essay tips page lists more than ten points, several of which are worth checking one by one: focus on one event, one activity, or one person rather than covering too much; go beyond chronological storytelling and include opinion or reflection; make the thesis clear from the outset; avoid writing a history report; share something the activities list and transcript do not show; limit the number of people who review the essay so the student’s voice is not lost; and proofread carefully.

Assemble the other materials. The transcript should include grades from the first three years, the senior year schedule, and first-term senior grades when available; Carleton also requires a counselor recommendation (school report) and two academic teacher recommendations. Carleton adopted a permanent test-optional policy in 2025, and Fall Early Decision applicants who submit scores must have them received by November 20; self-reported scores are accepted.

Treat interviews and arts materials as optional. Interviews run from early June through January 15 of senior year; visual arts, music, theater, dance, and film samples can be uploaded on the applicant status page, and creative writing portfolios are not accepted.
