Science Olympiad Engineering is for grades 5 to 8. It develops hands-on building skills, inventive thinking, and the ability to solve complex engineering problems with limited resources. The year runs 35 weeks. The course design draws on the engineering build events of the Science Olympiad competition, but the focus in class is on the skills themselves.
What Happens in Science Olympiad Engineering Class
Each stage centers on one type of engineering task. Common types include load-bearing structures, powered devices, launching and throwing devices, and protective cushioning devices. Every task type moves forward in the same way:
- Understand the constraints: Materials, size, time and budget all have limits. The hard part of an engineering problem is often not building something, but building it within those limits.
- Design a plan: Students first sketch the structure on paper and predict its weak points, then start building.
- Build and test: Students build to the plan, test with a common standard, and record the data.
- Iterate: Based on the test results, students locate the problem, change one thing, retest, and compare the before and after.
Choosing Between Science Olympiad Engineering and VEX IQ
VEX IQ Robotics Intro uses a standardized kit and covers mechanics, electronics and coding, with structures mainly assembled from kit parts. Science Olympiad Engineering uses open-ended materials. Students decide for themselves what to use and how to join it, so mechanical principles and judgment about materials carry more weight. Students who enjoy coding should choose VEX IQ. Students who enjoy making physical objects should choose this course.
What Background Science Olympiad Engineering Requires
No engineering or building experience is required. Willingness to work with one’s hands matters more than experience. Younger students who want an early start can take Little Makers Science first.
What Each Science Olympiad Engineering Term Produces
At the end of each term, students have several finished devices that have been tested, along with project notes that record the design, the data and each revision. These notes are a way of working that students can carry directly into formal competitions or research projects later.
Science Olympiad Engineering Enrollment and Schedule
Creative workshops come in three enrollment units: full-year classes, term classes, and summer camps. This course runs as follows; dates follow the 2026-27 program guide.
- Full-year class: 35 weeks, August 31, 2026 to May 30, 2027; once a week, 90 minutes per session.
- Switching direction: a creative workshop seat can move between directions, so a child can try 3 to 4 areas in a year, with finished work shown and discussed with parents at the end of each stage. To switch, confirm the transfer timing with a course advisor.

What does the course test?
Three things: hands-on building, inventive thinking, and solving engineering problems with limited resources. The third is the hard part, since students have to make trade-offs under real material constraints rather than follow a known solution, and there is rarely one correct answer to reach.
What grades in Irvine is it for?
Grades 5 to 8, across 35 weeks. EDUBUS is based in Irvine and runs this course as a small in-person group with an online section at the same time. Workshops enroll in rolling short terms, so one seat lets a student rotate through 3 to 4 domains in a year.
What background do Irvine students need?
No prior building experience is required; willingness to work with your hands matters more. Younger students in grades 1 to 3 can start with Little Makers Science and its build, assess, improve habit. For anyone close to the line, check the fit with the teacher first.
What do Irvine parents see each term?
At the end of each stage a student has several finished devices that have been tested, plus project notes recording the design, the data and each revision. Teachers stay in contact with parents, so progress in building and problem solving is visible beyond how the object looks.
Science Olympiad Engineering or VEX IQ?
It depends on whether the interest is engineering builds or robots. This course is about completing engineering tasks under constraints, with whatever materials are at hand. VEX IQ Robotics Intro combines electronics, mechanics and coding around robots, and starts from zero experience.
