AP World History: Modern covers global history from about 1200 to the present, organized into nine units. It trains cross-regional comparison, analysis of continuity and change, and writing for the document-based question (DBQ) and the long essay question (LEQ). Its exam structure is identical to AP United States History; the difference is in content range and the kind of argument required.

AP World History Covers a Wide Range, but the Exam Tests Frameworks, Not Details

Of the nine units, four carry the highest weights at 12% to 15% each: land-based empires, transoceanic interconnections, revolutions, and consequences of industrialization. The exam does not require students to memorize each country’s chronology. It requires students to compare how different regions responded in the same period and to explain the causes of the differences. Students who understand this review much less material.

Where Students Struggle in AP World History

  • Comparison questions: Students must handle two or more regions at once and explain the causes behind similarities and differences. A list of facts earns no credit.
  • Time scale: Continuity and change questions require answers that span a long period, and students often write about only one point in time.
  • English expression: There is a large volume of place names, institutions, and proper nouns. Imprecise word choice in writing weakens the clarity of the argument.

How EDUBUS Teaches AP World History

The course moves unit by unit. Each unit first builds the global framework for the period and then adds regional detail, so students do not get lost in scattered facts. Writing training is the same as in AP United States History. The four scoring items, thesis, source use, contextualization, and complexity, are broken down and practiced one at a time, then students move to timed, full-length writing under exam conditions. Classes are offered as online small classes.

AP World History or AP US History

Students in grades 9 and 10 taking their first AP history course usually choose World History, because it connects with the school world history course. Students planning a humanities path at American universities, or whose school already offers AP United States History, choose United States History. Students taking both should spread them over two school years rather than one, because the writing load in one year would be too heavy. For focused writing practice, see the DBQ writing course; for middle school foundations, see middle school history. Course availability at each school appears in the availability section below and in the Irvine Unified School District high school guide.

AP World History Class Formats

Which grade can take this AP at each school, what the prerequisites are, and how weighted GPA is calculated. Confirm with the school's current course catalog before choosing.

  • Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
Unweighted courses are scored A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1; the 28 AP courses and 11 weighted Honors courses are scored A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1. Weighted Honors courses are electives in grades 11 and 12; core courses in grades 9 and 10 are not weighted.
  • University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
Only AP courses and fourth-year world languages (French 4, Latin 4, Spanish 4, American Sign Language IV) add 1 point to the GPA, and the grade must be C or higher.

AP World History: Frequently Asked Questions

Should Irvine ninth graders choose World History or US History?

The exam format is identical, so the choice depends on interest and school scheduling. AP US History is more concentrated and its sources use more familiar language; AP World History spans 1200 to the present and demands harder cross-regional comparison. Grade 9 students can take either.

How is the exam structured?

The exam runs 3 hours 15 minutes. Multiple choice is 55 questions at 40 percent, short answer is 3 questions at 20 percent, the Document-Based Question is 25 percent, and the Long Essay Question is 15 percent. The DBQ gives 7 sources and includes 15 minutes of reading time.

The scope is enormous. How should a student review?

By unit weight. Land-based empires, transoceanic connections, revolutions, and the consequences of industrialization each carry 12 to 15 percent; the other five units each carry 8 to 10 percent. The course follows the nine units and drills comparison and continuity-and-change analysis.

What English level does it require?

The ability to write an argumentative essay independently. The DBQ and LEQ together are 40 percent of the exam and must be produced under time limits with a thesis, evidence, and source analysis. Students whose writing is still uneven should build it first through academic writing.

How do Irvine public high school students score?

In 2026, 66 percent scored 3 or higher and 14 percent scored 5. School-by-school rates at Irvine public high schools appear above. Lost points concentrate in the essays: listing facts without an argument, or discussing one region when the prompt requires a comparison across regions. Practice essays are graded against the published rubric point by point.

What formats does EDUBUS offer?

6 to 8 student seminars over 32 weeks with no spring break, ending before the AP exam, delivered online; 1-on-1 is also available. The course follows the nine College Board units with DBQ and LEQ writing practice.
