AP United States History teaches American history from 1491 to the present across the nine periods defined by the College Board. The AP US History Score Distribution Shapes How to Review
The exam has four parts: multiple choice at 40%, short-answer questions (SAQ) at 20%, the document-based question (DBQ) at 25%, and the long essay question (LEQ) at 15%. The writing parts total 60%. This means a student who only memorizes the timeline can earn at most the multiple-choice points. Periods 3 through 8 (1754 to 1980) each carry 10% to 17% and are the most heavily tested range.
Where Students Struggle in AP US History
- A thesis must take a position: The scoring guidelines require a thesis that responds to the question and can be defended. A statement such as “this period saw many changes” earns no credit.
- Use of sources: The DBQ provides 7 documents. Students must use at least 6 of them and explain the author’s point of view, purpose, or audience. This is scored as a separate point.
- Context and extension: Answers must place events in a larger historical context and connect them to developments outside the period in the question. This is the key to reaching the top score range.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP US History
The course moves through the nine periods, and each period includes source reading and short-answer practice. Writing training begins at the start of the school year and is broken down item by item against the scoring guidelines. Students practice the thesis sentence first, then source use and contextualization, and finally timed, full-length writing under exam conditions. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams, and every essay is graded and must be rewritten. Online small classes are offered in both spring and fall.

- Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
