USA Junior / USA Mathematical OlympiadUSAJMO / USAMO

USAJMO and USAMO are the highest level of U.S. high-school mathematics, with only a few hundred invitations nationwide each year. For admissions, 'USAMO qualifier' is among the mathematics credentials top STEM programs recognize most readily, and an award — especially USAMO Gold or Silver — establishes a national-level academic identity. For the student, it marks the transition from solving problems to writing real mathematics.

Organizer
Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
Eligibility
Invitation only, for students enrolled in the United States and Canada. The MAA has announced that 2027 USAMO/USAJMO qualification is based primarily on AIME scores, with AMC scores no longer a factor. USAJMO is for students in grade 10 or below who came through the AMC 10 track; USAMO is for those on the AMC 12 track. Roughly 250-300 students are invited to each.
Format
Two consecutive days, three proof-based problems per day, 4.5 hours each session, six problems in total. Each problem is scored 0-7 for a maximum of 42. Full rigorous proofs are required; a bare answer earns nothing. The exam runs synchronously at designated sites across the United States and Canada (each day 1:00-5:30 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. PT). Topics are the four olympiad areas — algebra, number theory, combinatorics, and geometry. No calculators or reference materials.
Awards
USAMO awards Gold to at least roughly the top 6%, Silver to roughly the top 12%, and Bronze to roughly the top 18%. USAJMO names Winners and recognizes approximately the top 20%. In both contests, any additional contestant scoring 14 or more receives Honorable Mention. Top USAMO performers are invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), from which the U.S. IMO team is selected.

About the competition

USAMO and USAJMO sit at the top of the MAA ladder, held each March at designated sites across the United States and Canada. Unlike everything below them, these are pure proof contests: two consecutive days, three problems and 4.5 hours per day, six problems worth 42 points, hand-graded 0-7 per problem on the IMO scale.

Selection is purely by score — the MAA has stated that 2027 qualification is based primarily on AIME results, with AMC scores no longer weighted. Students on the AMC 10 track in grade 10 or below are placed in USAJMO; those on the AMC 12 track go to USAMO. USAJMO problems are roughly comparable to the easier half of USAMO, but both demand complete, rigorous written proofs.

The syllabus is the standard olympiad four: algebra, number theory, combinatorics, and geometry. The real barrier is not having an idea but writing it as an airtight argument; first-time participants routinely lose points to skipped steps and unhandled edge cases.

USAMO awards Gold, Silver, and Bronze; USAJMO names Winners and recognizes about the top 20%; in both, any further contestant with 14 or more points earns Honorable Mention. The strongest performers are invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program, from which the U.S. IMO team is chosen. For Irvine families this is typically a four- to six-year commitment from AMC 8 onward.

How to prepare

  • Start practicing proof writing during the AIME stage. Write out two or three full proofs a week and have them critiqued, focusing on logical completeness, edge cases, and notation rather than cleverness.
  • Work systematically through the classical toolkit in each of the four olympiad areas: inequalities (AM-GM, Cauchy, SOS), number-theoretic constructions, invariants and extremal principles in combinatorics, and concyclicity and inversion in geometry.
  • Read official USAJMO/USAMO solutions closely and compare them with your own write-ups to find the places you thought were clear but were not. This is the fastest source of gained points.
  • Rehearse the pacing: three problems in 4.5 hours means 90 minutes on a single problem is fine. Practice thinking for long stretches without frustration, and the rhythm of switching problems when stuck and returning later.
  • Write something even on problems you cannot finish. On the 0-7 scale, proving a key lemma or handling the special cases cleanly usually earns 1-3 points, and those points often decide an award.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an Irvine student be placed in USAJMO or USAMO?

The format is identical: two consecutive days, three proof problems each day, 4.5 hours per day, six problems scored out of 42. The difference is the field and the difficulty. USAJMO is for students in grade 10 or below who qualified through the AMC 10 track and uses somewhat easier problems; USAMO is for those who came through the AMC 12 track. Placement follows your qualification path — it is not a choice. USAJMO is not a lesser award.

How are students selected for USAMO/USAJMO in 2027 — does the AMC score still count?

No longer. The MAA has announced that 2027 USAMO and USAJMO qualification is based primarily on AIME performance, with AMC scores no longer a selection factor. In effect the AMC's role shrinks to earning the AIME invitation, and those 15 AIME questions decide whether a student reaches the olympiad. Roughly 250-300 students are invited to each, with thresholds published by the MAA after results.

How is the USAMO qualification index actually calculated?

This is where outdated information trips families up most. The index used to be the AMC score plus 10 times the AIME score, was revised for 2025-26 to the AMC score plus 20 times the AIME score, and for 2027 the MAA has announced that AMC scores no longer count at all, with selection based primarily on AIME. So the index calculators and 'what index do I need' threads circulating online are largely obsolete. Go by the MAA's announcement for the current year.

Can Irvine's international students take USAMO or USAJMO?

USAMO and USAJMO are for students in the United States and Canada, and the official rules place explicit conditions on a participant's citizenship or residency; international students in the U.S. on a student visa are generally outside the invited pool. The wording can be adjusted year to year, which matters most for recent immigrants and families who have just moved into a U.S. high school. Confirm the current eligibility clause on the MAA site before the AMC.

Where is USAMO/USAJMO held and what does contest day look like?

It is written simultaneously at designated sites across the U.S. and Canada; invited students are assigned a site by the MAA rather than choosing one. The contest runs over two days, 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Pacific each day (1:00 to 5:30 p.m. Eastern), three problems per day. Full rigorous proofs are required — an answer alone earns nothing — and no calculators or reference materials are permitted. For the 2027 dates, rely on the MAA's notice to invited students.

How are USAMO awards tiered, and what counts as truly top?

USAMO awards gold to roughly the top 6%, silver to about the top 12%, and bronze to about the top 18%; USAJMO names Winners and recognizes roughly the top 20%. In both, scoring 14 or more out of 42 earns Honorable Mention. The real ceiling is an invitation to MOP, the summer olympiad program from which the U.S. IMO team is chosen — only a few dozen students a year, and an internationally recognized marker.

How many years for an Irvine student to reach USAMO?

Honestly, four to six years of sustained work from the AMC 8 stage: build fundamentals on AMC 8, clear the AIME cutoff reliably on AMC 10/12, get AIME consistently to 8 or above, then spend another year or two specifically on writing proofs. The last step is the one families underestimate — going from solving a problem to writing an argument that survives 0-7 grading is a different skill. It does not reward cramming and suits planning from late elementary or middle school.

How much does USAMO or USAJMO matter for an Irvine student's applications?

It is the heaviest credential on the American high school math ladder. With roughly 250-300 invitees each per year, it is a top-fraction-of-a-percent marker that admissions officers at elite STEM programs recognize by name, and it carries genuine weight in the Common App Honors section or under Activities & Awards on the University of California (UC) application. But it is the natural outcome of years of training, not an admissions tactic — chasing USAMO for the sake of an application is essentially not a workable plan.
