MATHCOUNTS is the most prominent team-based middle-school math competition in the United States and one of the few with a complete school-to-chapter-to-state-to-national ladder. For Irvine families the value goes beyond the trophy: a chapter or state placement is a record local private high schools and gifted programs genuinely notice, and the team and countdown formats build the speed and composure that pure problem-set practice never develops.

Eligibility
Students enrolled in grades 6-8, with a lifetime limit of three years of participation. Public, private, charter, virtual, and homeschools may register; tutoring and enrichment centers are not eligible to register teams. If a student's school does not register, the student may enter as a Non-School Competitor (NSC), capped at 14 per school.
Format
In-person, about three hours, in four rounds: Sprint (30 problems / 40 minutes / no calculator / individual), Target (8 problems in 4 pairs, 6 minutes per pair / calculator permitted / individual), Team (10 problems / 20 minutes / four-person collaborative team / calculator permitted), and Countdown (oral head-to-head, up to 45 seconds per problem, no calculator; optional and unofficial at the school, chapter, and state levels). Each school may send up to 14 students: one four-person team plus ten individuals.

Fees
School registration is $42 per student at the early rate (deadline 2026-11-03), $48 per student at the regular rate (deadline 2026-12-15) and $53 per student late; the per-school cap at those three rates is $588, $672 and $742 respectively. A Non-School Competitor pays $75 at the regular rate and $85 late, with NSC registration opening 2026-11-05 and no discounts available. Title I schools receive a 50% discount.
Awards
Individual and team recognition at the chapter and state levels. The national competition (224 competitors) awards medals, trophies, and college scholarships, with plaques for every national participant. Advancement: the winning chapter team moves on to State automatically, plus the top two individuals not on that team, with at least six Mathletes advancing per chapter; the top four individuals at State, with their coach, receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Nationals.

About the competition

MATHCOUNTS is run by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation for students in grades 6-8. The season begins with school-level selection in the fall and advances through Chapter competitions in February, State in March, and Nationals in May in Washington, D.C. Registration for 2026-27 opened August 17, 2026, the regular deadline is December 15, and Nationals are set for May 9-10, 2027.

The competition has four rounds over roughly three hours. Sprint is 30 problems in 40 minutes with no calculator, testing raw speed and accuracy. Target is 8 problems in four timed pairs of six minutes, with calculators allowed. Team is a four-person collaborative round, 10 problems in 20 minutes, and largely decides team standings. Countdown is an on-stage head-to-head oral round with up to 45 seconds per problem — the segment that tests nerves.

Content overlaps heavily with AMC 8, but the style differs: MATHCOUNTS leans toward applied problems and fast computation, rewarding mental arithmetic and memorized facts, while AMC 8 leans toward insight and construction. Many students prepare for both in one cycle.

Two notes for Irvine parents. For-profit tutoring centers cannot register teams; students enter through their school or as Non-School Competitors. And California chapter and state dates and venues are set by local coordinators and posted over the fall and winter.

How to prepare

  • Sprint carries the most points and responds fastest to training. Ten to fifteen minutes a day of timed mental arithmetic — fraction-decimal conversions, percents, squares through 30, common Pythagorean triples — produces visible gains within a few months.
  • Target allows calculators, but the time sink is reading and modeling. Require yourself to write the equation before touching the calculator so you do not fall into the habit of typing something and filling in whatever appears.
  • Divide labor in the Team round. Four people should not solve every problem together — claim problem types by strength first, then spend the last five minutes reconciling disagreements. Rehearse this before the meet.
  • The Countdown round trains nerves and reflexes. Practice face-to-face against a timed partner so the pressure of having to speak within 45 seconds is familiar; written practice cannot substitute.
  • Cross-train with past MATHCOUNTS Sprint and Target papers alongside AMC 8. The topics overlap while the styles complement each other, so one winter can cover both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Irvine school has no MATHCOUNTS team — how do we register?

Register as a Non-School Competitor. For 2026-27, NSC registration opens November 5, 2026 at $75 regular and $85 late, with no discounts, capped at 14 NSCs per school. Before registering, parents must contact officials at the child's school of record to confirm the school truly will not register a team. NSCs compete individually and are not part of team awards, but individual scores can still advance to the state and national levels.

Can a tutoring center register my child for MATHCOUNTS?

No. MATHCOUNTS states plainly that for-profit tutoring and enrichment centers are not eligible to register teams. Only schools may do so — public, private, charter, virtual, and homeschool groups. This differs sharply from the AMC, where learning centers can register as testing sites. A center can help with preparation, but registration has to go through the school or the NSC route.

Where do Irvine students compete in the MATHCOUNTS chapter round?

Irvine falls in the Orange County chapter, run by CSPEEF (MATHCOUNTS of California), and in recent years the chapter competition has been held on the UC Irvine campus, starting at 8 a.m. on a Saturday. The chapter covers Orange County ZIP codes including the 92600-92999 range. Nationally the chapter window is February 2027; the exact 2027 date and venue are set and announced by the local coordinator.

How many years can an Irvine student compete in MATHCOUNTS?

It is limited to students enrolled in grades 6, 7, and 8, and each student may participate for at most three years in their lifetime — so a child who starts in sixth grade uses up their eligibility by eighth grade, with no fourth attempt. Public, private, charter, virtual, and homeschool students all qualify. Grade 5 and below cannot enter; those years are usually bridged with Math Kangaroo and AMC 8.

What actually happens on MATHCOUNTS competition day?

Do both — they train different things. AMC 8 is 25 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, no calculator throughout, purely individual, and rewards depth of reasoning. MATHCOUNTS adds a calculator round, a collaborative team round, and an oral buzzer round, rewarding speed, mental arithmetic, and composure under pressure. MATHCOUNTS also has a chapter-to-state-to-nationals ladder, while AMC 8 is a single round.
