American Mathematics Competition 8AMC 8

AMC 8 is the recognized entry point of the American math-competition ladder and, for many Irvine families, a child's first real encounter with competition mathematics. The score itself does not go on a college application, but Honor Roll and above is one of the few nationally comparable academic benchmarks available in middle school, and local private schools, gifted programs, and summer math camps often look at it. Its bigger value is developmental: it shifts a student from computing correctly to reasoning clearly, which is exactly what AMC 10 and AIME demand later.

Organizer
Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
Eligibility
Students enrolled in grade 8 or below who are under 14.5 years of age on competition day. Students cannot register themselves; they must sit the exam at a site whose teacher has registered as an MAA Competition Manager.
Format
25 multiple-choice questions (five options each) in 40 minutes. One point per correct answer, zero for blank or incorrect; maximum score 25. No calculators or other computational aids are allowed. Content covers middle-school counting and probability, number theory, algebra, plane geometry, and logical reasoning; no trigonometry or calculus.
Contest dates
January 21 – 27, 2027
Fees
Registration is handled by a Competition Manager at a school or institution. For 2026-27 the early registration fee is $55 (deadline 2026-10-28), the regular registration fee is $75 (deadline 2027-01-05, which is also the final date for a new Competition Manager) and the late registration fee is $115 (deadline 2027-01-14, open only to returning Competition Managers). Each bundle costs an additional $25 and covers 10 students. What parents actually pay depends on the host school or institution.
Awards
Perfect Score certificates (25/25); Distinguished Honor Roll for roughly the top 1% nationally; Honor Roll for roughly the top 5%; School Honor Roll for schools whose top three scores total 66 or more. All participants receive a certificate and a score report.

About the competition

AMC 8 is administered by the Mathematical Association of America for students in grade 8 or below who are under 14.5 years old on competition day. It runs each January: 25 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, no calculator, one point per correct answer and no penalty for a wrong one, out of 25.

The syllabus stays inside middle-school mathematics — counting and probability, number theory, ratios, linear equations, plane geometry, and a heavy dose of logical word problems. The difficulty is not the content but the clock: about 96 seconds per question, with the first ten nearly routine, genuine competition thinking from roughly question 15 onward, and a final five that separate the field. Strong school grades alone rarely produce a score above 20, which is where many families first see that contest math is a separate training track.

AMC 8 sits at the bottom of a clear ladder: students move to AMC 10 around ninth grade, qualify for AIME by clearing the cutoff, and the strongest AIME performers are invited to USAJMO or USAMO. The skill set overlaps heavily with MATHCOUNTS, so many prepare for both in one winter.

One registration caveat: the MAA does not accept individual sign-ups. A teacher must register as a Competition Manager and proctor the exam. Most Irvine middle schools offer it, but availability varies, so ask early in the fall.

How to prepare

  • Work through complete past papers under a strict 40-minute clock, and analyze where points are lost on questions 15-25 rather than just tracking the total.
  • Sort every mistake into 'missing knowledge' versus 'never saw the method'. The first is fixed by review; the second needs targeted practice in counting, construction, casework, and geometry auxiliary lines.
  • Because there is no penalty for a wrong answer, drill the discipline of filling in every bubble in the last three minutes, and practice elimination so a guess is better than one in five.
  • Practice without a calculator from day one. Mental arithmetic with fractions, ratios, and perfect squares is what buys time for the back half of the paper.
  • Students aiming above 20 (near Honor Roll) should start about six months out with two timed sets and one error-review session per week, which beats cramming in the final month.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for AMC 8? Can my child sign up on the MAA site directly?

No. MAA only accepts registrations from schools or institutions with a registered Competition Manager, so students and parents cannot buy a seat on the official site. EDUBUS is a registered AMC 8 site open to outside families, and your child does not need to be our student: enroll.edub.us/amc-8-2027

Our school does not offer AMC 8 — where can my child take it in Irvine?

At EDUBUS. We are a registered AMC 8 site, open to outside families, not just our own students. Seats are first come, first served: enroll.edub.us/amc-8-2027. If the school already runs AMC 8, register there — a student may only sit the contest once.

How does an Irvine teacher become an AMC 8 Competition Manager?

The teacher creates an account on the MAA AMC registration site (maa.org/amcreg), registers as Competition Manager on behalf of the school, then buys bundles — $25 each, covering ten students. For 2026-27 the AMC 8 site fee is $55 early bird (deadline October 28, 2026) and $75 regular (deadline January 5, 2027, which is also the last date a brand-new Competition Manager can register).

What AMC 8 score gets Honor Roll or Distinguished Honor Roll?

The MAA sets these by percentile, not by a fixed number: Honor Roll is roughly the national top 5% and Distinguished Honor Roll roughly the top 1%, so the raw cutoff moves every year and is announced after the contest. In recent years Honor Roll has landed somewhere around 18-21 and Distinguished Honor Roll around 21-24. Treat any single year's number as a snapshot. There is also School Honor Roll, for schools whose top three scores total 66 or more.

What grade should an Irvine student start AMC 8?

Any student in grade 8 or below may take it, including elementary students. The one hard rule is being under 14.5 years old on contest day, which mainly affects older or held-back eighth graders. A common rhythm is a low-pressure trial in grade 5 or 6 and serious attempts in grades 7 and 8. Starting very early with a very low score can dent confidence, so make sure fractions, ratios, counting, and basic geometry are solid first.

Is AMC 8 hard? What's the national average?

The content itself is not above grade level — 25 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, no calculator, covering middle-school counting and probability, number theory, algebra, plane geometry, and logic, with no trigonometry or calculus. What makes it hard is pacing and the last five problems; the national average usually sits around 10-12 out of 25, and most students stall on questions 21-25. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so every blank should be guessed.

When is AMC 8 2027, and when does EDUBUS registration close?

The official 2026-27 AMC 8 window is January 21–27, 2027, and each site picks its own date inside it. The exact EDUBUS date and cut-off are on the registration page: enroll.edub.us/amc-8-2027. Seats are limited, so aim to book by November rather than at the deadline.

After AMC 8, what should Irvine students move to?

They are not mutually exclusive, and many Irvine students do both. After AMC 8, eighth graders typically step up to AMC 10 — similar topics but a 75-minute sitting and deeper algebra. MATHCOUNTS is limited to grades 6-8 and adds a calculator-allowed Target round, a four-person team round, and oral countdown, training speed and collaboration. If AIME is the goal, make AMC 10 the main line and use MATHCOUNTS as in-season competitive practice.
