The gold medalists form the four-member US team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held July 18 to 25, 2027 in Warsaw, Poland. In 2026, all four US team members won gold medals in Vilnius, Lithuania.

  • Finalists agree not to attend any other olympiad or summer program that year. Students also applying to programs such as RSI should weigh the trade-off in advance.
  • The Finals include a practical exam of about six hours and a theory exam of about three to four hours (the official exam page gives both figures). Practice lab skills and data analysis along with theory.

USABO Finals: Frequently Asked Questions

If an Irvine student's school does not offer USABO, can the student still take part?

Possibly. Students can use the My school is not participating option on the USABO website to request a host school; CEE tries to find one but cannot guarantee it. An Irvine student should make the request before student registration closes on November 22.

Can a student in Irvine on a student visa reach the USABO Finals?

Not as far as the Finals. The Open Exam has no citizenship requirement, but from the Semifinal on, students must be US citizens or green card holders and show a passport or green card.

Do the USABO Finals cost anything?

Room and board are provided; students pay their own travel, and those with financial need may contact CEE for help. Schools and authorized test centers pay a $125 registration fee for the Open Exam.

Can an Irvine student who makes the Finals still attend RSI?

No. Finalists and their guardians sign an agreement not to take part in any other national olympiad or summer program that year, and CEE names RSI as the example. Students with a chance at both should weigh the choice in advance.
