The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) is a state agency created by the California Legislature, first held in 1987 and funded through a public-private partnership. The program is a month-long residential one, held from 2026 at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona); the 2027 session runs July 3 to July 31. Students choose one of 8 departments (Animation, Architecture & Environment, Dance, Film, Music, Theater, Visual Arts and Writing) and are taught by practicing professional artists.
CSSSA mainly admits California residents in grades 8 to 12, with up to 20 places for out-of-state and international students. It describes admissions as highly competitive, based on artistic assignments and teacher references, and does not publish an admission rate. The 2026 comprehensive fee for California residents is $5,174; need-based aid is for California residents only, nearly half of the 500 California residents attending qualify, and no applicant is denied admission solely for inability to pay.
Graduates are named California Arts Scholars and can earn 3 units of college extension credit from the California State University system. EDUBUS recommends that California students headed toward the arts put CSSSA near the top of their list: it is run by the state, selects by portfolio, and offers need-based aid to California residents. The 2027 deadline is February 28, 2027, and late applications are not accepted.
