The College Board scoring rubrics for AP English Language and Composition (effective fall 2019) score each of the three free-response essays on 6 points: Thesis 0 to 1 point, Evidence and Commentary 0 to 4 points, and Sophistication 0 to 1 point, and the essay section counts for 55% of the exam score. The five high schools of the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) place this course anywhere from 10th to 12th grade; the grade differs, but the rubric is the same. Reading the three rows first, and then deciding what to practice, is more effective than writing more essays.
AP English Language and Composition Exam: Format and Weighting
The AP English Language and Composition exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app and has two sections. Section I has 45 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes and counts for 45% of the score, with 23 to 25 reading questions and 20 to 22 writing questions. Section II has 3 free-response essays in 2 hours 15 minutes (including a 15-minute reading period) and counts for 55%. The 2027 exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 12, 2027, Session 1.
| Essay | Task |
|---|---|
| Synthesis | Read 6 texts, including visual and quantitative sources, and cite at least 3 of them in an argument |
| Rhetorical Analysis | Analyze how a writer’s language choices shape meaning and purpose |
| Argument | Write an evidence-based argument on a given topic |
The College Board course page describes the course as the equivalent of an introductory college-level writing course with no recommended prerequisites. It has 9 units and builds five skills: reading closely and interpreting texts, evaluating sources of information, gathering and combining information from multiple sources, writing evidence-based arguments, and drafting and revising.
AP English Language Essay Rubric: How the Three Rows Are Scored
All three essays share one structure: Thesis 1 point, Evidence and Commentary 4 points, Sophistication 1 point, for a total of 6. Each row is scored independently; earning the thesis point does not depend on the other two rows.
Thesis row (0 to 1 point). There is one condition: respond to the prompt with a defensible position. Restating the prompt, taking no position or a vague one, listing pros and cons, or stating an obvious fact that needs no defense earns nothing. The scoring notes state that the thesis may be more than one sentence (if the sentences are close together), may appear anywhere in the response, and earns the point even if the rest of the essay fails to support it.
Evidence and Commentary row (0 to 4 points). This row carries two thirds of the points and assesses whether the evidence is specific and whether the commentary forms a line of reasoning. The four levels differ as follows.
| Points | Evidence | Commentary |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mostly general (synthesis: references at least 2 sources) | Summarizes the evidence without explaining how it supports the argument |
| 2 | Some specific, relevant evidence (synthesis: references at least 3 sources) | Explains how some evidence relates to the argument, but no line of reasoning is established, or it is faulty |
| 3 | Specific evidence supports all claims in a line of reasoning (synthesis: from at least 3 sources) | Explains how some evidence supports the line of reasoning (rhetorical analysis: explains at least one rhetorical choice) |
| 4 | Same as 3 | Consistently explains how the evidence supports the line of reasoning (rhetorical analysis: explains multiple rhetorical choices) |
The scoring notes add one limit: writing with grammatical or mechanical errors that interfere with communication cannot earn the fourth point in this row.
Sophistication row (0 to 1 point). This point rewards sophistication of thought or a complex understanding of the rhetorical situation, and there are four ways to earn it: exploring complexities or tensions across the sources, situating the argument in a broader context to articulate its implications or limitations, making rhetorical choices that consistently strengthen the argument, and writing in a style that is consistently vivid and persuasive. Sweeping generalizations presented as context, mere hints at other arguments, and complex sentences or vocabulary that do not strengthen the argument earn nothing. The notes state that the point is awarded only when the sophistication is part of the student’s argument, not merely a phrase or reference.
What the AP English Language Rubric Means for Irvine Families
The five Irvine public high schools offer the course in different grades. University High School and Irvine High School place it in 11th grade, Woodbridge High School in 10th grade, and Portola High School in 12th grade (with AP English Literature in 11th); Northwood High School does not offer the course. Whatever the grade, the May exam is scored on the same rubric, so parents can use these three rows to judge whether the student’s essay practice is aimed at the right target.
The exam score can also become college credit. The University of California AP credit table lists Language and Composition as UC-E with 5.3 semester units or 8 quarter units, and caps the combined credit for AP Language and AP Literature at 5.3 semester units or 8 quarter units. The University of California also states that AP scores lower than 3 will not adversely affect the chances for admission.
EDUBUS Advice on Preparing for the AP English Language Essays
Secure the thesis point first. The threshold is a defensible position, not polished prose. In practice, write the position in one sentence and check that it answers the prompt and could be disputed; an essay built on “this issue has advantages and disadvantages” loses the point in its first line.
Put most of the practice into the Evidence and Commentary row. This row holds 4 of the 6 points, and the step from 2 to 3 points depends on a line of reasoning: several claims that support one another, each backed by specific evidence. The synthesis essay must cite at least 3 sources, and the rhetorical analysis must explain what multiple rhetorical choices accomplish rather than simply name devices. Grammar errors that interfere with communication cap the row at 3 points, so revision cannot be skipped.
The sophistication point does not come from vocabulary. The scoring notes expressly exclude complex language that does not strengthen the argument. The reliable routes are handling tensions among the sources or stating the limits and scope of the student’s own position, and both depend on the line of reasoning from the Evidence and Commentary row.
The rubric carries over to college application essays. College application essays also call for specific detail, clear reasoning, and reflection on the student’s own experience, so AP English Language training transfers directly. The EDUBUS College Essay Bootcamp and Academic Writing course are organized around the same approach. Students taking the course this fall should also note the AP exam ordering deadline of November 13; the full AP lineup is in the AP Course Overview, and the grade placement and entry requirements at each Irvine high school are in the IUSD High School Guide.
