The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s admission pages state that the Early Action deadline for fall 2027 entry is November 1, all application materials must arrive by November 9, and decisions are released on or before January 31, 2027. Deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, leaving Irvine 12th graders less than two weeks.

Who Is Affected by the UW–Madison Early Action Deadline

The deadline affects high school seniors applying for fall 2027 entry; domestic and international applicants follow the same dates:

Round Application deadline Materials deadline Decision
Fall Early Action November 1 November 9 On or before January 31, 2027
Fall Regular Decision January 15, 2027 January 22 On or before March 31

Early Action is non-binding, and admitted students do not need to commit until May 1. Early Action results are admit, defer, or deny; for deferred applicants, the university first reviews mid-year 12th grade grades and makes final decisions by the end of March. The university notes that applicants who submit within 5 days of the deadline will not receive reminders about missing materials.

What to Do About the UW–Madison Early Action Deadline Now

Choose one application platform and complete two essays. Applicants may use the Common Application or the Universities of Wisconsin Application; the university has no preference, but applicants must use only one through submission. Common Application users write one Common Application personal essay, and every applicant also answers a required prompt on why they want to attend the university and why they are interested in their chosen major. The application asks for a first- and second-choice major, and admission expectations may differ for business, engineering, dance, and music.

Prepare the remaining materials. The application fee is $80, and fee waivers are available for students with financial hardship. Course and grade information can be self-reported in the Common Application or sent as an official transcript by the school. At least one letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to academic ability, such as a teacher or counselor, is required; the university encourages students interested in engineering to ask a math or science teacher.

Decide whether to send test scores. SAT and ACT scores are optional for applicants through the spring 2028 term; the choice is made on the application and is final. The university considers only the top composite score from a single sitting and does not superscore. Sending official scores adds 2–4 weeks before materials are complete, and the university states there is no advantage to rush delivery.

International and mid-high-school transfer students should confirm English requirements. Applicants educated in non-English-speaking countries whose four years of secondary school were not all taught in English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores; minimums and a comparison across colleges are in New TOEFL 1–6 Scale: College English Rules for Irvine.
