The 2026-27 dates on the Stanford University admission website show that the standard deadline for Restrictive Early Action (REA) is November 1, but applicants who plan to add an Optional Arts Portfolio must submit the Common App by October 15, with portfolio materials due October 20. Twelfth-grade students in the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) with strong work in the arts who plan to apply early to Stanford have less than two weeks.
Who is affected
Applicants with outstanding work in visual art, dance, music, or theater who intend to present it through a portfolio. Stanford’s portfolio page lists four areas: Art Practice, Dance, Music, and Theater and Performance Studies. The portfolio is optional: submitting one does not require a major in the arts, and students who do not submit one may still study or participate in the arts.
| Application plan | Common App deadline | Portfolio materials deadline | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restrictive Early Action with portfolio | October 15 | October 20 | By mid-December |
| Restrictive Early Action, standard | November 1 | None | By mid-December |
| Regular Decision with portfolio | December 5 | December 10 | By early April |
| Regular Decision, standard | January 5, 2027 | None | By early April |
Early applicants submitting a portfolio may still send transcripts, the School Report, and letters of recommendation by November 1. All deadlines are 11:59 p.m. in the applicant’s local time zone.
What to do now
Decide first whether to submit a portfolio. Stanford states that portfolios are reviewed at the discretion of the admission office and the fine arts faculty. A portfolio is worth submitting only when the work is clearly outstanding; otherwise, the standard November 1 deadline applies.
Finish the Common App two weeks early. Portfolio materials are uploaded through the Stanford portal after the application is submitted, and login instructions arrive by email within 48 hours. Stanford also requires SAT or ACT scores and letters from two academic teachers; the request process is explained in Recommendation Letters: Four Steps for IUSD Seniors.
Fit the early plan into the overall college list. Students who cannot meet October 15 may still add a portfolio with a Regular Decision application by December 5. For a profile of the university, see Stanford University; for the overall college list and plan selection, see College Admissions Planning.
