The dates table of the Northwestern University undergraduate admissions office shows that Early Decision (ED) applications for fall 2027 entry close November 1, 2026, financial aid materials are due December 1, and decisions are released in December. Irvine seniors choosing Northwestern as their Early Decision school have a little over three weeks.
Who Is Affected by the Northwestern Early Decision Deadline
Seniors applying to Northwestern University for fall 2027 entry. The key points:
| Item | Northwestern policy |
|---|---|
| Early Decision | Due November 1; financial aid materials December 1; decisions by mid-December |
| Regular Decision | Due January 4, 2027; financial aid materials February 1; decisions by the end of March |
| Application | Common App or Coalition with Scoir; $75 fee, waivers available |
| Recommendations | Two letters: one from the counselor and one from a core-subject teacher, preferably from junior or senior year; supplemental letters accepted |
| Essays | Common App personal essay no longer required; one required Northwestern question (300 words or fewer) and one or two of five optional questions (fewer than 200 words each) |
| Standardized testing | Optional; SAT superscored by the university, ACT applicants report the official superscore and must not calculate their own |
| Interviews | No alumni interviews; students at U.S. high schools may submit an optional 60- to 90-second Glimpse video by November 7 for Early Decision |
Early Decision requires an Early Decision Agreement and is binding. Northwestern states that it uses the same review criteria for Early and Regular Decision and that financial aid does not differ between the two rounds; about half of last year’s entering class came from Early Decision. Applicants to the Integrated Science Program (ISP) or Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS) submit a separate program application, and both programs require a year of calculus in high school.
What to Do Now About the Northwestern Early Decision Deadline
Settle the supplements first. The required question asks how the student’s identity, school, community, or household has shaped how the student would engage at Northwestern. The optional questions cover what the student would paint on The Rock, a class or research project the student would create, communities the student would join, the appeal of the campus location, and the perspective the student’s background would contribute. Planning and revision support is available through the EDUBUS College Essay Bootcamp.
Confirm recommendations and decide on scores. The counselor letter and teacher letter are submitted by the school; the process is explained in Recommendation Letters: Four Steps for IUSD Seniors. Testing is optional, and the timing of score reports is covered in Early Deadlines: Will SAT/ACT Scores Arrive in Time?.
Place Early Decision within the full college list. A student may hold only one Early Decision application. College list and early strategy support is available through the EDUBUS University Admissions Planning service, and the binding terms of each early plan are explained in Early Decision vs. Early Action: Which Are Binding.
