The first-year applicants page of the Cornell University undergraduate admissions office shows that the Early Decision (ED) application and fee for fall 2027 entry are due November 1, 2026, all other materials are due November 13, and decisions are released in mid-December; Cornell requires first-year applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. Irvine seniors choosing Cornell as their Early Decision school have three weeks to settle both test scores and the choice of college.
Who Is Affected by the Cornell Early Decision Deadline
Seniors applying to Cornell University for fall 2027 entry as their first choice. Early Decision is binding, and admitted students must withdraw all other college applications. The key points:
| Item | Cornell policy |
|---|---|
| Early Decision | Application and fee (or waiver) due November 1, and any portfolio or design supplement on the same date; all other materials November 13; decisions in mid-December |
| Regular Decision | Application due January 2, 2027; other materials January 19; decisions in late March |
| Financial aid | International students apply by the application deadline; priority dates for domestic students are November 15 for Early Decision and February 15 for Regular Decision |
| Application | Common App; $85 fee, waived for applicants who meet Common App criteria and plan to apply for aid |
| College choice | Applicants apply directly to one of nine undergraduate colleges, each with its own essay question |
| Recommendations | One counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations |
| Standardized testing | SAT or ACT required; scores may be self-reported and must be verified with official scores before enrollment; Cornell considers the highest SAT section scores across dates, uses the ACT superscore, and does not require the ACT science section |
Admission for international students is need-aware: interest in financial aid is one factor in the decision, and international students who do not apply for aid when applying cannot apply for it later as undergraduates.
What to Do Now About the Cornell Early Decision Deadline
Choose the college first, then write the essay. Cornell admits by college, and the essay question changes with the college, so switching colleges means rewriting. College choice and early strategy support is available through the EDUBUS University Admissions Planning service, and essay support through the College Essay Bootcamp.
Confirm that test scores will arrive in time. Scores may be self-reported on the Common App or in the applicant portal, but the student must already have a usable score; release dates for the October and November tests are in Early Deadlines: Will SAT/ACT Scores Arrive in Time?.
Confirm recommendations and transcripts with the school. One counselor letter and two teacher letters are submitted by the school; the steps are in Recommendation Letters: Four Steps for IUSD Seniors, and the binding terms of Early Decision compared with other early plans are in Early Decision vs. Early Action: Which Are Binding.
