What does the grade 6 acceleration decision look at?
Irvine Unified School District asks for three of four conditions: an A- or better in every grading period, 85 percent or better on the end-of-course exam, 90 percent or better on the basic skills test, and a pass on the Standards for Mathematical Practice assessment.
Why do Irvine students need grade 7 material?
Because acceleration means going straight into the grade 7 fast track. The course follows the district syllabus across grades 4 to 7, so a student who is placed can keep up in Enhanced Math 7/8 instead of meeting the material for the first time in September.
Can an Irvine student join mid-year?
Yes. The course runs 35 weeks and takes new students in both fall and spring. A placement assessment comes first and decides where in the sequence the student starts, so time is not spent on material the student has already covered at school.
What comes after acceleration for Irvine students?
Enhanced Math 7/8 in grades 7 and 8, then Enhanced Math I. District acceleration starts in grade 7 and there is no skipping in elementary school, which is why grade 6 is the point at which families prepare rather than earlier.
What materials are used?
The district's own math materials, aligned to the Irvine Unified School District syllabus, so the problems a student practices match what the placement process actually tests rather than a generic sixth-grade workbook. The course covers grades 4 through 7 on that basis.
