The exam runs 3 hours, and multiple choice and free response (FRQ) each count for half. Free response has 4 questions that require handwritten Java code, and credit is awarded point by point for a correct method implementation. This means students must write code with correct syntax and complete handling of edge cases without a development environment. They cannot rely on an editor’s autocomplete or error messages.

- Handwritten code: The most common lost points come from syntax details, such as loop bounds, return types, and access modifiers.
- Traversing data collections: Adding to and removing from one-dimensional arrays, 2D arrays, and ArrayList during traversal is error-prone. These questions appear every year.
- Recursion: Even after students understand the concept, they need a great deal of practice to write it correctly under time limits.
How EDUBUS Teaches AP Computer Science A
The course moves unit by unit. Each concept is explained first and then implemented by hand, and all homework is programming practice. From the middle of the school year, free response is trained by question type. Students write code on paper and check each other’s work for errors, to simulate exam conditions. In spring, the class moves to full timed practice exams.
AP Computer Science A or AP Computer Science Principles
AP Computer Science Principles is designed for students with no programming background. It focuses on computational thinking and the social impact of computing, and programming is only one part of it. CSA is a true programming course and requires a large amount of practice time. For students planning to apply in computer science, engineering, or data science, CSA carries clearly more weight. Students interested in competitions can go on to the USA AI Olympiad introduction and intensive training, or to computer science competitions. - Portola High School: Grade 10 has a single AP option, AP Human Geography, which the school calls the "grade 10 choice." The large majority of AP courses are for grades 11 and 12. AP Precalculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A open from grade 10 subject to math prerequisites. Restricted to grade 12 are AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP United States Government together with Honors Political Economy, AP 3-D Design, and Honors Engineering Design and Development. Grade 9 students may not sit an AP exam at the school unless they have taken the course or the Irvine Unified School District GATE office approves it on the basis of existing preparation.
- University High School: No AP courses are offered in grade 9. From grade 10, students may take AP Precalculus, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, and AP Cybersecurity. AP United States History is offered in grade 10 on the condition that the student earned Honors Distinction in both semesters of World History. Most AP courses are concentrated in grades 11 and 12.
