The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) is a Pennsylvania Department of Education program held at Carnegie Mellon University for rising seniors from Pennsylvania. Students live in Pittsburgh for five weeks and attend college-level lectures and labs in biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and physics, with an emphasis on cooperative learning and hands-on research. The 2027 program runs June 27 to July 31, and applications close January 31, 2027.
Admission is merit-based, with at least one qualified student accepted from each Intermediate Unit. A Department of Education notice says 72 students were selected for 2025; application counts are not published. Every admitted student receives a full scholarship covering room, board and materials, leaving families to pay only for travel and personal expenses. Only Pennsylvania residents may apply; no citizenship requirement is listed, and California students are not eligible.
California has no program called a Governor’s School. The closest counterpart to PGSS is COSMOS: created by the California Legislature, run by the University of California, open only to California students and offered at six campuses including UC Irvine. Unlike PGSS, COSMOS charges a fee with need-based aid and accepts applicants from 8th grade.
