The High School Honors Science, Math and Engineering Program (HSHSP) is run by Michigan State University and was founded in 1958. It began as a science enrichment program for local high school students and grew into a national residential research program, covering all areas of science, engineering and mathematics since 1989. Participants live on the East Lansing campus for seven weeks and carry out individual projects in a university mentor’s lab. MIT Admissions lists HSHSP among the selective science and research summer programs on its summer programs page.
Under the 2024 rules, the program accepted only US citizens and permanent residents in 11th grade, expected applicants to rank in the top 20 percent of their class, and selected about 24 participants a year. The 2024 participant fee was $4,000 including room and board, with need-based scholarships available; the session ran June 16 to August 3, and applications were due March 1.
The program website now says HSHSP will not take place in summer 2026, and an archived copy from November 2024 shows the 2025 session was also cancelled. No reason or restart date has been given. EDUBUS recommends that students who planned to apply turn to residential research programs that are still running, such as Texas Tech’s Clark Scholars and the University of Florida SSTP.
